Technical & Tight 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

East Roswell is a tight, technical and fair woods course. The fairways are clear and defined. Some holes (like 2, 5, 12 & 13) have multiple lines to take. Three sets of tee pads per holes allows for any level of play (Pro/Black pads are cement). The course has elevation changes on several of the holes and all the baskets are in well thought out positions.

Cons:

The other tee pads (Red & Blue) are gravel/natural and do get washed out after rain storms every once in a while. I wouldn't recommend playing the course right after a rain storm. A few of the Discatcher baskets are slightly damaged but not too bad.

Other Thoughts:

Two signature holes are 4 & 16. Hole 4 you get to throw over a few trailers in the middle of the fairway. Not something you see too often. Hole 16 is the equalizer of the course. Sometimes you can be having a good round and end up getting a 5 or 6 on this hole very easily if you don't play it safe and keep it on a fairway.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Three tee pads per hole (Red, Blue, Black) with increasing levels of technicality and distance. The Red and Blue tees often have multiple options, especially the Blue Tees (which were my favorite). The course is very easy to follow once you find the first tee, which is at the edge of the woods by the kiddie playground to the right of the parking lot. There are bathrooms by the parking lot, and a nearby Kroger for ice and supplies.

The course winds through the woods with nice elevations changes and mostly well defined fairways. There is a nice mix of short finesse holes and some long crushes, but the trees place a premium on control.

Cons:

Hole 4 is a blind tee shot with a high probability for losing a disc. The long (cement) tee pads are a bit repetitive, and place a premium on throwing the same righty long straight/slight flip turnover fade to the right blind tee shot. (But now that I think about it, that is a great shot to learn, so I just raised my rating of this course to a four). The basket of 17 is too close to the fairway of 11.

Other Thoughts:

The Red and Blue tees provide a completely different look at most of the holes, and the Blue Tees are especially challenging, with some highly technical controlled turnover shots for right handed players. I would play this course on a regular basis if I lived in Atlanta.

A challenging wooded monster. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 26, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a complete rewrite based on a new review process I have come up with.
3 different tee pads that actually provide different experiences.
Although it is primarily a woods course there is a good variety of different obstacles. Terrain is used to its advantage and unique holes like the "trailer hole" provide a one of a kind experience.
A good variety of distances although it is a mid-length course in general.
Red tees are playable but still difficult for beginners. Each tee level provides new challenges.
Course is easily navigated once you find hole 1.
Baskets and tees are clearly marked.
Signs provide distances for each level of tee but the signs are only at the black tee.
Restrooms and parking are convienent.
A decent amount of benches and trash cans...though some people could use a lesson in using them!
A very safe feeling park with nice neighborhoods surrounding it.

Cons:

Very tight fairways...need an accurate shot from any tee or you will be punished.
Lots of overgrowth off the fairways which makes disc loss very possible.
Muddy and slippery when wet, not something I docked points for but it should not be your first choice after a good rain.
Many holes have a single approach line.

Other Thoughts:

A nice, tight course tucked away in the woods. Lots of elevation changes make it interesting. Since the AO came through the course has been improved a lot. There could still be some nex-T signs on the back 9 though.
This is a fun course that rewards accuracy...unfortunately I do not have any!! That won't stop me from coming back though. Mid-range discs and putters are crucial here.

About my "system":

An average course is 50 points. Points are awarded above and beyond that for having better than average features. Courses are docked points for lacking those features.
East Roswell park scored 70.5 out of 100 which puts it square at 3.5 discs.
It's biggest plusses were the multiple tee pads and terrain variety.

It's biggest negatives is the course maintenance (really outlying maintenance, course is gorgeous) and some trash lying around.

Overall very much an above average course.

A for Awesome! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2007 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward -- A
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities -- A
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography -- A
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion -- A-
5) Multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them -- NA

Other Thoughts:

I ranked this course subjectively based on my own personal enjoyment factor...more accurately my "personal addiction factor". Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they chose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I say adds anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

There are good DISCatcher baskets, tee signs, and 3 sets of tees on every hole. The concrete tees helped in the wet/rainy weather, but they did seem to be unfinished. The park seemed to be in a nice area and was easy to access.

The course is tight wooded and scoring under par appears to be a good score for all skill levels, depending on which set of tees you play. The different tees make this course enjoyable for a wider range of skill levels. I only played the long tees, but they were mostly on the longer side, with a few short putter shots mixed in. There is decent use of the elevation change and the many trees will certainly force an accurate shot if you expect to score well on this course.

Cons:

They seemed to be working on this course, but several things are unfinished, so these cons may improve before I have a chance to visit this course again. I did not see any benches. The shorter pads on each hole were made of crushed stone and as mentioned by the previous reviewer, the back tees appeared to be unfinished and potentially hazardous for those with a big run up.

Also, I agree with the course being a bit repetitive, with a definite lefty advantage. There were several instances where a wayward drive could cross into another fairway and become very dangerous for unsuspecting players. There were also several instances where there was a nice fairway and then a few select trees right in the middle of the fairway, bringing in a little bit of luck and making some of the shots a bit unreasonable.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course the day before and during the Atlanta Open, all during the wet/rainy weather. You can tell a lot of work has been put into this course gearing up for the Atlanta Open, but it would be nice to see the finished results and to play this course in better weather conditions. I did not get a chance to really enjoy playing this course as much as I would like to have, due to the tournament and the weather conditions. I look forward to playing this course again in the future if I am in the area.

Woody woody 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Multiple tees and pins makes for an increasing level of difficulty as you get to the longer sets of tees. As such, this provides a decent attraction for multiple skill levels. The short tees would not discourage the beginner - but the long tees probably would.
Mostly tight and wooded - this course puts a premium on accuracy off the tee.
There is also a fair amount of well used elevation changes - not huge scale big hills - but moderate ups and downs in the woods - this was perhaps the best quality of this course.

Cons:

Very repetitive - lots of holes force you to throw the same kind of shot - hyzer flip, finishing right.
Teepads are unfinished, and too short. I went to play the NT event having heard there were new concrete tees. Unfortunately all the good work in getting concrete pads in place was unfinished, leaving raised teepads perhaps only 10' long with a step up on the back, and a drop off on the front - making the effort of trying to throw hard a bit dangerous. When/if the areas around these tees are filled to bring them to grade - the tees will be much more playable. The two short sets of tees are stone dust.

Other Thoughts:

New tee signs are beautiful, and very well done.
Memorial plaque for Drew Eberhard inset in the concrete on the first tee was also very well done - and a moving tribute to one of our fallen disc golf brothers.
The course is a decent track, but in places, it seems as if they tried to do too much with the extended tees, as holes are packed tightly together in the woods, making for the occasional dangerous situation where you are throwing directly towards another teepad or pin placement (holes 11&17 come to mind). This also makes for a lot of visual distractions during tournament play.
Definitely a nice place to play - would be a beautiful shady place in the hot Ga summer.

Hole 4 and the trailers. Otherwise known as the pink elephant in the room. people either love them or hate them, but I believe they are only a hospital trip away.

The crushed gravel teepads can become uneven and cumbersom to tee off from.

Other Thoughts:

There are three sets of tees from each hole. The shorter ones don't necessarily mean the easist and vice versa from the long. The course is not officially 'on-the-books' as a permenat addition to the City of Roswells parks. Future developments in the city are threats to the current course design

It's a good course, just your typical day of golf in the woods. I plan to go back, but I think I'll learn to throw sidearm first. Also, not a course to bring new discs on.

Trees R Us 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 1, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

If you like trees this is the place for you. Multiple tee boxs allow everyone from newbis to grizzled pros get the challenge they are looking for. You will use every shot in your bag and probably have to make a few up on the spot due to some of the positions you will find yourself in. The new signs are great I wish all courses had signs like these. You get information on the hole you are about to play and what direction to look for the next tee box. Very helpfull. Innova baskets with the bright yellow stip at the top help with visability. The new tee pads for the black tees are great and boy are they a challenge. There is elevation change throughout the course, plenty of variation no risk of getting bored here. The course is very well maintained and clean. Plenty of benchs and trash cans available. the course itself is pretty well isolated from the rest of the park. All the people I have encountered here were very friendly. Put this course into your must play in Atlanta list you will not be dissapointed.

Cons:

There is a sign warning you not to leave valuables in your car. I have not had any issues at all.

Other Thoughts:

This course is the place that the local landscapers and tree cutters dump their wood chips. This is a great boon to the folks maintaining the course. I ran into one of the trucks on their way out. You never know what you will see disc golfing!
This course is very fun, and also very challengeing. Don't expect to score well first time out. Course knowledge really helps here.

Pros:

When I first played this course I had only been playing the sport for 3 weeks. I have not played it 4 times and have been playing a year overall. Now that I am better and can play more shot types, it's a great course. It is heavily wooded but it is fair. Great new signs and concrete pads from the blacks. I played today from the black tees for the first time and I.......ACED NUMBER 14!!!!!! First ace ever, ERP will forever be remembered. 173 G Elite-X BUZZ on an annhyzer flex!! BEAUTIFUL!! HAD A WITNESS TOO, EVEN BETTER!!!

Cons:

All holes are wooded and provide a high risk/reward factor based on your shot selection. I would reccomend an anny on 14 with a BUZZ myself, just saying!

Other Thoughts:

Not as un-safe as some would say, but since there are signs sayig lock and hide items in your ar, DO IT IDIOTS!! This course is fun to me. If you are looking for a tough round, this course can bite you hard. If you do not like wooded holes, don't even bother unless you just want to say you have played it. I actually liked it a lot!!!!

East Roswell Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 13, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well groomed heavily wooded course. Great signs and maps on every tee. Multiple tees give good challenge no matter what tee you play from really, all pretty challenging. Great variety in elevation throughout the course. Use just about all types of shots on this course and probably use the majority of your discs as well so that always fun. Trash cans and benches all over the course so it keeps maintained very well. Never too far away from your car, at least not for too long since its not in the best neighborhood either.

Cons:

Very tight fairways on just about everyone hole. Except the hole that has the trailers in the fairway. Could cut some more trees down to make the fairways a little more reasonable, even with a good drive more than likely you are going to have a clean approach shot with all the trees in the way. The back nine some holes come within feet of other holes so watch out for other people and their discs. Didn't really enjoy the tee pads either, crushed stone was probably nice when new but with the nature of the game they are now warped and deformed, but nothin major or unplayable.

Other Thoughts:

Over all pretty good course a lot of fun and a lot of pinball holes. Just pray that your on your game and who ever hits the least amount of trees in a round usually wins. A must visit though!

East Roswell=Trees 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 14, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course will bring out the best and worst in every level of player. Of course it will challenge beginners a little more. There are mostly heavily wooded holes running through out the entire course and there are only a few holes that have empty fairways. There is usually an obstacle in your face so experiences pros should like the difficulty. Most of the holes are relatively short drives so lower power players aren't at too much of a disadvantage. This course also contains a lot of elevation changes. A great mix of hyzer and anhyzer shots so you should probably bring your "A game".

Cons:

If you like airing it out onto open fairways then you might not like this course very much. If you don't like pinball holes then you definitely wont like this course. There are some holes that don't really have fairways in the traditional sense of the word. I don't particularly mind this aspect of the course, but some people might. Most of the tees are crushed stone though and I don't always feel like I have great footing on that surface.

Other Thoughts:

This course is definitely worth stopping for if you're anywhere near Alpharetta . It's a great contrast to some of the more open courses in Georgia. I didn't find the scenery particularly inspiring though. I think that the designers of this course did a great job with the land though. There are a great mix of uphill, downhill, hyzer, and anhyzer shots.

very nice course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 28, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a very nice predominantly wooded course. It's an easy flowing compact course with lots to offer. You'll even get the feeling of hiking in the woods on a few holes.

The course itself has lots to offer. To begin with, there are three tee pads at each hole. This gives you plenty of choices in terms of length and difficulty. Reds and blues are great for both beginners and the seasoned disc golfer in my opinion. Reds are the shortest and blues are slightly longer with slightly a slightly different look at the baskets. Both give the experienced players a good choice to mix things up depending on their mood that day and both will teach the beginner a lesson or two. Some argue that the reds can be just as challenging as the blues. These tees pad are crush run gravel pads that are in satisfactory condition. The black/pro tees are a great option too. The nice thing about the black tees is that they have great concrete pads. These can be intimidating if you are a new player but especially enjoyable if you're an advanced player.

No matter what you decide you'll find a good mix in terms of lengths, slight to moderate dog legs, elevation changes, and obstacles that will challenge you and keep you on your toes. If you are used to playing shorter tees the new concrete will tempt you to stretch you skills. All in all anyone can find a great challenge here.

There are a few trash cans and benches scattered around. This course has really nice signs posted at the black pads too. Make sure to notice the distances as you pass them if you're playing the shorter pads. Unfortunately, there has been some mild vandalism on a couple of the signs but no big deal as far as play is concerned. The flow seemed to make perfect sense based on the land. And you should have no trouble navigating the course. (Pay attention to the map at the 4 to 5 transition) The Innova baskets are in good shape. This course/park is feels clean and very safe.

I like the fact that number One, nine, and eighteen all start/end at the same place. It is at the entrance of the course and is right by the parking lot. Therefore a quick run to the car and for whatever reason is quite convenient. Also you'll appreciate the nearby bathrooms and water fountain beside the pavilion. The Pavilion is also a welcomed convenience during tournaments.

The Roswell Disc golf Club ( www.roswelldiscgolf.org ) is very involved with the course and it shows. If you run into any of them on the course they will be happy to guild you around or answer any questions. Look for them when you're out playing.

Cons:

Well the semi-trailers on hole number four are definitely unusual and I can see why people don't like them. To be honest though, I don't mind them at all. They seem to add a little something different to the course. The fact of the matter is that ideally they should not be there. I think they just used the land that was available. After you play it a couple of times you just simply play through and don't think too much about it. It is however a little distracting the first time. You can make it fun if you try.

I've heard complaints about the crush and run gravel pads on red and blue are not the greatest. Again I don't mind them but I know pads are a big point of contention with some/most disc golfers. Some are in better shape than others. I saw signs of erosion and little revines where people repeatedly took the same path down the pad. I have seen worse. Other than that, this is pretty solid course.

Other Thoughts:

This is overall one of my favorite Georgia courses. It is in a nice part of town, the park is clean, and is easy to get to. It is only a couple of miles off Hwy 400. If you are from out of town and looking to play a few courses, you should try heading north on 400 for several more miles to Central Park when you finish East Roswell. It is also right off the highway and it is a good course. You could also head west to Wills Park and Sequoyah Park.

One of the Best in Atlanta Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 11, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Set apart from the rest of the park. Very wooded, provides shade from sun or rain. Variety of lengths with lots of terrain changes. Three sets of tees. Red is still plenty challenging for an intermediate. We've just moved back to the blues, forget black tees unless you are really good / pro level. Course "loops" so 9 and 18 are both by 1 and 10 (near the parking lot). Real bathrooms (not port-a-potty), so you can wash up afterward. You need all the shots here to score. I've played here more than 50 times, and I'm still discovering new lines on certain holes. Nice wood chip fairways, and fairly well marked. Best part is it's self contained, quiet, and away from rest of park. This course is so narrrow, it makes most other courses seem easy, or even boring if they are open courses. I learned to play here, so everything else seems easier.

Cons:

Some holes seem to have "random" trees in the fairway. Can be very narrow, with luck coming into play. People complain about the crushed stone tee pads, but they seem OK to me. Some holes are a little funky or just plain hard, like number 4, the "trailer hole". Could use some "next tee" directional signs. I find myself often directing new players to a particular hole.

Other Thoughts:

I've played about 40 courses all around the country, and I'm proud to call this my home course. Its always challenging, sometimes frustrating. I'll go way under par at a different, more open course, and then come back to my home course for some "humble pie". Note, Fulton county just passed a library expansion bill which has a proposed library taking up at least some of this course. Site would take out the dreaded "trailer hole", possibly 2 or three others. Don't know the exact plans for the course, assuming the library goes ahead. You can see the proposed library sign at the corner of Fouts Rd. and Holcomb Bridge. Roswell Park Police are often patrolling, and are serious about contraband. No alcohol allowed in Georgia public parks. Same powers as regular police. Be good or be careful.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Clean, old growth forest- tight yet minimal rough (thorns, ivy, etc). Scenic landscape. Large hills make for tough shots, putts, walking. 3 sets of tees/hole. Well marked- a colorful sign+ a paragraph describing how to play the hole successfully. Good practice for other courses like it- easy to play, fun even though not well designed. A challenge of wills.

Cons:

Overall, the design of many holes is just bad. It doesn't allow a reasonable shot by a good thrower to get through or even find a clean landing spot to throw an approach from. Good shots can careen deep into the woods. Tees are gravel, while not horrible, not great either.

Other Thoughts:

Though not great design, it is good for working on trick shots and tight throws without high risk of lost discs or getting torn to shreds. Manages to be an enjoyable course and makes you work and think.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 4, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course forces you to learn new shots and get out of weird situations. I personally developed my side arm both rollers and air shots almost exclusively there. It also boosts the accuracy and approach game and helps with the mental game by teaching one how to handle frustration. The concrete tee pads on the blacks are a nice addition making the course much more playable.

Cons:

Many holes are very poorly designed. Hole nine is perhaps the worst hole I have ever seen being in the running with hole eight and hole six and several holes at the IDGC. This course often times does not reward good shot making due to too many trees in middle of the fairways with no clear line or shot. This is the type of course that you can score well at with your "C" game but tank it with your "A" game and that is just not fair. The tee pads are horrible and many are placed at bizarre angles. The difference between the black and blue tees is negligible with the blue tees being actually harder on several holes. The red tees are too short for anyone except the most clueless novice yet offer short shots too advanced for this level player.

Other Thoughts:

The course overall is poorly designed and is located on land that really cannot hold a disc golf course. It could be legitimate if several dozen trees were removed, several holes redesigned, several tee pads repositioned and all the tee pads rebuilt without undulating gravel substrate. UPDATE: Following the addition of the concrete tee pads for the black tees I have up'ed my rating an entire point from 1.0 to 2.0.
