Rock Solid Old School Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Built in 1987, Lum's Pond DGC is older than many of the players who play it. It's showing it's age. The design has that 80's feel just like that old leather coat in your closet. The distances are a little tame by today's standards. The baskets, although in good shape, are fairly hard to spot through the summer foliage. The old fiberglass tee signs are now badly faded and hard to decipher. The course is heavy on hyser throws. There are old school Pars listed such as a 299 foot par 4.

It's still an enjoyable throw. There's plenty of shade for those hot summer days.

The course's tight fairways really forces you to hit your lines on almost every shot.

# 16 features a big hyser bomb.

I did feel the course was ahead of it's time due to the fact that on a couple of holes you really have to shape your 1st or 2nd shot in order to be in a position to birdie or par the hole.

This is now a recreational course. Advanced/Pro players would tear this course up.

Cons:

The shorter distances make this a true recreational course. Big arms will miss the chance to air it out. The old tee signs are hard to read. Some players may become frustrated with the technical nature of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Thanks to local player, Jim, for showing me the course. It always helps to have a guide. Lum's Hill is a perfect little rec course for old duffer's like Jim and I. You younger, stronger studs may want to find your challenge elsewhere.

old 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Kiosk, concrete tees (most were 6x10 created by 15 2x2 cement blocks)

Easy navigation

Short beginner friendly course that is tight enough to create some challenge for more experienced players.

14 was a nice short hole. Only 200 feet, but 2 clear paths; a wide right dog leg with a large protective tree or a short straight heavily wooded path.

18 is another nice hole. It is a short scenic sligh anny shot to the final basket.

Course does require some variety. Hole 16 requires an RHBH or LHFH. While their is a hole on the front 9 with a 90 degree right turn impossible to hit with out a RHFH or LHBH.

Cons:

Hunters with Shotguns walking around the course was a bit off putting.
Baskets were pretty old and were very hard to see in the woods.
Signs were rusted to the point where vital information was missing.
Mando on hole 2's sole purpose is to make the hole over 150 feet, it actually forces you to play closer ho hole 5's tee.
Barb wire OB areas on hole 5 in the middle of the fairway.
6 had arrows on a tree to indicate a dumb mando that was unclear on the sign.
Signs were odd. they showed 5-7 different paths to the basket.
Very righty friendly. 16 was a horseshoe shaped hole that was just further torture to the LHBH player I was with.

Other Thoughts:

If you play this course, plan on hitting up other Delaware state park courses to make the most of your $6 fee.

This is a tight, but dinky course. average hole distance is only 287 feet, but if you go off the fairway it can still give some challenge.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Technical
- Not too long; Not too short
- Good Variety of righty/lefty/neutral shots
- Nearly impossible to lose a disc

Cons:

- Can become frustrating as rough can be very unforgiving
- Some tees are made of tile and are easy to trip on
- Some holes require extreme technical ability with gaps that can only be hit by the most practiced golfers every single time

Other Thoughts:

Many either love it or hate it.
Gives smaller arms and less experienced players a legitimate chance of winning as there are only three holes that require you to air out your disc.
My personal favorite thus far.

First Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

State Park Annual Fee gets you a free round any time you want. Can play 18 in just over 1 hour. Fun course for 1st timers. Not crowded even on weekend.

Cons:

Was muddy -swamp on some fairways after several days of rain. Hole markers at tee boxes are beat up and need replacing-can't make out some pars/hole layout.

Other Thoughts:

Not bad for a 1st timer.

Tight...but just Right! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 24, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is tight but just short enough to justify these narrow lanes...any shorter it would be too easy any longer and it would be impossible. Every hole requires a technicians skill either off the tee as in hole 6, on approach and often putting around trees. You will become a master precision player if this is your home course. A few holes utilize the open field either in the beginning, middle portion, or finishing stage of the hole. I particularly enjoyed the challenge of shooting from woods to field to woods. Hole #1 allows you to throw a screamer across the field into the woods. Fun way to start. So many interesting fairways with doglegs, S turns, and multiple pin positions that often seem to change the hole layout completely. You won't get bored here. The best hole on this course is #16, a unique long horseshoe that drives R to L and you will feel as though your going in a huge circle.....so much fun trying to negotiate that hole and it finishes on a nice green with. A spectacular hole start to finish and the reason I might come back to play here again. (sometimes one hole makes you yearn that much) This is a thinking man's course....if your a knucklehead who wants to just rip away wildly your not gonna enjoy yourself here...but for those more refined players who have the patience to deal with knockdown trees...(yes kids, often trees are used to knock your drive down and test your approach skills)....and skill to hit a tight window this place is a blast. Funny thing is I did not play well but felt the course was fair despite it's reputation. Ace run on #15 was fun and one of the few non blind holes.

Cons:

$6 Out of State Pay to Enter Park...be sure to play more than one DE State Park course in a day as the pass works everywhere that day. The tees were not consistent and the huge pavers used for tees in the woods often had gaps that made me less than confident during run ups. I agree that every course needs one completely ridiculous and tight no lane type of hole. #9 will make many wonder WTF am I supposed to do here....usually these holes are tough on first timers, I took a 6. This hole favors those more familiar with the course and alternate routes/safer plays. Many will scoff at this tree laden where is the fairway hole. The lake is often nearby but never incorporated into the course which would have raised my score a bit...a little dramatic scenery and a lake as backdrop/danger lurking is a plus for me. Hole 18 is a bit wimpy to finish on....too bad the huge cricket field could not be used as a final get your frustrtations out bomb to finish the day. Course is primarily flat. I played in the fall and it still was very blind...in summer this place must be a gnarly beast.

Other Thoughts:

The biggest problem this course has is that the most difficult and greatest challenge ever stuck in the ground is a mere 5 minutes up the road at Iron Hill. Comparisions are sure to be made. If this course were elesewhere it would probably be played more and given a bit more love. If you like short technical courses requiring unique shots then this is the perfect course for you. Disc Golf course is in Area 1 and this is all the way to the rear of the park...course starts to the left of the bathrooms in the wide open field.

Decent course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenges your accuracy, nice scenery, well-kept except for some signs.

Cons:

Most holes are pretty similar - relatively short and heavily wooded.

Other Thoughts:

Not much to add to other reviews. It's a good course I would play again but I don't know that I'd make a special trip for it.

You're never far from your car 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 14, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plays around the perimeter of the park, and as such you're always pretty close to where you parked. Many holes incorporate both the old-growth forest surrounding the pond and the grass field. Well-worn and defined throwing lanes. Many alternate pin placements (1 basket per hole). Modest length good for beginners. Dated signage, but signage nonetheless. Good variety of left-and-right shots.

Cons:

Pond doesn't come into play, a wasted opportunity. Concrete tees are made of uneven tiles. Holes 2-4 flood often. No elevation. Wish the field was used for a few wide-open holes. Seems like the whole course could use a sprucing-up. Bathrooms closed for the season in winter.

Other Thoughts:

Not only does Delaware charge for using its state parks, it's obviously biased against disc golfers. No less than 4 signs while driving in state that no alcohol is allowed in "area 1" aka the disc golf area, though it's allowed everywhere else.

Pros:

Mostly wooded. A mix of short and longer holes. A fun course that wasn't to challenging but not to easy as well. A good course to take a beginner to introduce them to the game. You will use a lot of different shots as I thought hole variation was really well done

Cons:

out of state entry fee (I believe 5$ or more)

Lumskulls 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 18, 2007 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Challenging and fun with many different shots required. Unusual in the fact that every hole can be birdied but only 3 of them can be considered easy (2,7,14) with another 3 being down right hard. (4,9,16).
Restrooms and nice lake.

Cons:

Would be great if it could be expanded. Pay to play. Often wet and muddy around the lake. A few tees are sub standard. Hole two is nothing without the mando and really just gets in the way of holes 1,3,4,5.

Other Thoughts:

This course isn't great by today's standard but the in and out of the woods shots and the technical nature of it somehow still make it a lot of fun to play. Hole two needs to be removed, hole 3 can be lengthened and a new hole added on the back. This simple change would make the course more fun more safe and have much better flow for tourneys and crowded days.
