"Also, special areas are areas designated for smoking by the Tournament Director. As the policy states, these areas will be out of the public eye."

The key here is the pluralization of the word areas - implying more than one. I don't know the courses where the majors take place; however, in my town, 90% of the holes are out of the public eye. A TD, if he/she so desires, can make as many designated smoking areas as possible. Let's say smoking is allowed on holes 3-7 and 10-16 because they are so far back in the park that no one is even there. I can comply with this!!

Really?

You want to grow the sport? My friend and I finally got good enough to get a membership. We both smoke. We will not be renewing. Thank you for wasting my money PDGA. I am just curious how many tournaments are in people's houses, domes, or shopping malls. We are outside! I know many have said it before, but this is the United States right? Cigarettes are legal right? WTF. I know some people don't like to be around smoke, but some people like to smoke. Where are there rights? Was plannng on making 3 or 4 trips this year to play in tournaments, not anymore. Thanks PDGA or should I say communist China.

If only

if i can't do a shot of tequila at every tee then people shouldn't be allowed to smoke either

Yeah too bad public intoxication is illegal and smoking is not. Let's leave the revoking of rights to the politicians they're doing a good enough job as it is already.

How is it ridiculous to disallow banned items? And give penalties when players obviously are carrying banned items?

So are you saying I should get stroked for carrying a pack of smokes in my bag and you just happen to see them there? If I walk around with the pack of smokes tied to a string, dragging behind me, that is my right, even if I am banned from actually smoking them. Maybe I will get a full color mini with a super bright picture of a pack of Marlboro Reds, or wear a Marlboro T-shirt, baseball cap, and scream "MARLBORO!" everytime I make a putt. That is my right, whether I smoke or not.

Anyone have some good Marlboro stencils out there? I bet some smokers would love to dye some of their discs...

This is great, even if someone on my card is being 'careful' not to let their smoke bother me, it always manages to eventually and even a whiff makes me feel sick and makes me lose focus on my shots. This is much needed.

Really? Do you shush the birds? A whif of smoke ruins your round?

If someone is smoking next to you while you're putting, then fine. Ask them to move, and I'm sure they will. If you catch a sniff on the way to your upshot and blame the smoke when you shank it, it's time to take up Bingo.

...Oh wait.

Unfortunately the above statement is not true either. The PDGA has a dress code for majors so if they want to amend that to ban alchohol or tobacco shirts then they can. It is certainly not your "right" to wear or do whatever you want in a PDGA event. In a casual round sure, but not at the tournaments that they sanction. It is your right not to play in a tourney though!

Keep in mind that I agree with how you feel.

Blahh....

"The PDGA survey clearly shows that more members agreed with the smoking ban than not". thats because the majority of people dont smoke, so how is that fair to impose your will on the minority.
PDGA, a bunch of Utilitarian a-holes!

Only because they voted while the majority was outside smoking!

Really InnovaDude? your a twot, its outside! There is plenty of O2 for you to breathe without having to inhale a small amount of smoke. It affects some of us the opposite and is total discrimination, we need a smoke to relax and play well

Have you guys really gone 11 pages with commenting on, objectifying, degrading, or otherwise slobbering about the picture at the end of that story? Disappointing.

Because we can carry beer under the current rules as long as you don't drink any......

Also most tournaments in this area have a beer sponsor......oh and that one event...WORLDS!!!

Or to no renew.......unless you are a Pro and expect to play A-tiers....btw that is the only reason I still renew.

As much as I despise Cig. somking, I think it may not be in the best interest of the PDGA to ban smoking right now. They are supposed to be trying to increase membership, and make members happy, which obviously this move is not doing. I recall not to long ago seeing a Ball Golf pro walking from one hole to the next huffing on a cancer stick on national tv!

I could see, maybe if our tournaments were on tv, being watched by millions of people, a ban, or at least a policy of discretion may be needed, but right now I think it should be reversed, or at least left up to the td to decide.

If people want to kill themselves w/ tobacco, do it on your own time. Nobody wants to inhale that crap and get cancer due to second hand smoke. Good for the pdga. :hfive:

no sympathy

I give the PDGA non-smoking policy 5 discs. The idea that not allowing smoking is discrimination is bass ackwards. If you smoke, then YOU are imposing a negative externality on the performance of a non-smoker on your card. Until now, the non-smoker has had no control over this. Conversely, if YOU as the smoker are not allowed to smoke at a tournament, and this in turn negatively affects your game, well then it's certainly not the fault of the others on your card...

Also, I applaud the PDGA for making a decision that may attract some complainers, but will ultimately benefit the health and quality of the sport.

Until now, the non-smoker has no control over this, and didn't get compensated in any way (in econ an externality is defined as a negative imposition without compensation). Screw cigs.....we will still be sneaking off to smoke weed.

At least we don't throw butts all over the course! (I know none of the cig. smokers on here do that, lol!)

That's probably good evidence that a large majority of the forum commenters did not read through the actual article...
