The Ask MJ & Comet Love Thread

Bought two Challengers at Academy Sports yesterday (because I apparently dont own enough frisbees)... They feel amazing, Why?

Hey MJ, I hope the new year is treating you well! I started playing around last May and had put a comet in my bag after a month or two. After taking it out for a long time and getting a bit better, I now carry two Z's and an X at all time. A real staple in my bag. My question for you is:

How much distance can you get out of your Comet in ideal conditions? At what point do you need to start adding some hyzer to you Z's? My stable Z Comet is now a month old or so and when I release it flat, it sort of drifts to the right on a throw about 275'. I love that it can hold any line I put it on, but should I expect to be hyzer-flipping (at least a little) at that sort of distance?

Maybe it's just my form :\ regardless, Comets are leaving my bag. Just wondering if my form is still off!

Under good conditions , i can throw a comet around 400ft. I generally release comets with some hyzer, unless i need it to turn to the right fairly quickly. Most of throwing a comet properly is learning how much snap and spin to put on it to make it do the desired flight you want

Late 2004, early 2005 is my bet

First quarter 2004.

I've got a couple of unthrown tournament stamped Cryztal Z Challengers from the 2004 Big Valley Challenge (May 29-30) lying around, and picked up a blue first run (long since retired) from Angry Old Discraft Pro at the '04 Tarheel Tournament (April 17-18), so they had to be out prior to that.

What are your thoughts on the Banger? I've been trying many different putters to find one that sticks. Today I picked up a Z Banger and fell in love.

Are you coming to Missouri for the KCWO this year or anywhere near kc? If so i would love to play a round with you. I love watching videos of you playing, everything just seems so smooth and effortless.

I love the banger! But i only use it as my throwing and approach putter. It is too deep of a rim for my taste for putting

I'm finding I love the bangers for jump putts, approaches and drives. Not my favorite putting putter. Also decided to pick up an x comet and all I can say is DAMN. What a rad disc. Does anything you ask it to plus I love that it tells me if I'm throwing well or not.

Hello from a Swedish fan!

I have finished reading the entire thread while awaiting the spring and more disc golf friendly weather. I have a few questions about your throwing motion and spin. Do you actively extend your wrist in the throw or do you just keep it loose and let it whip out on its own? Is it the same weather you are throwing comet, driver or the banger?

I'll be doing the spin-disc-at-ceiling exercise to see if that helps and to improve my spin and also putting distance.

I would like to get some more distance on my shots. Mostly on my midrange and putter. I throw fairway drivers 300 feet max, midrange 260 and putters 230. I throw standstill but have been told I have good distance and snap for standstill. I practice the x step from time to time but so far I only see similar distance and worse accuracy.

Oh, and the distances are golf distances on low and strait shots. I prefer throwing straight at the target. For some reason I always throw worse in field practice than on the course. I guess I get obsessed with distance without a basket to aim for :)

Finally just some comet love. I have mostly used it on a short but very downhill hole and it just flies so straight with a bit of flip when throwing really slow, smooth and downhill. Other discs, even putters, easily fall out long to the right if not thrown hard. The only other disc I have had success with on this hole is the rattler. I'm looking forward to a season with the comet at my short wooded home course!

By the way, how do you like the rattler? I'm amazed with how straight and nonflippy it is. But I guess if I could putt like you I wouldn't bother with it either :)

MJ, can you tell me about your putting style and why do you putt with the Zone even though it's very overstable?

I like shallow rimmed putters too and I'm interested to try the Zone but I'm afraid that if it's too overstable..
