American Disc Golf Tour

They only had about 10 show up and cancelled. It didn't seem to be very well advertised in the area and I'm not sure people really knew about it. I think the 9 preregistered was an automatic number cause that number was at 9 on day one they announced.

Also a couple of guys from the local club went to the one in Chapin and apparently had a bad experience and told people about it. That probably didn't help.

What specifically was the complaint(s) with the Chapin tournament? Lunch was a bit shorter than I normally like is all I can think of off the top of my head and it rained so everyone had to be in the small pottery room due to the weather for the player's meeting and awards. Most sensible people take complaints as opportunities to improve so it would be beneficial for you to share. Thank you.

It seems to me that the first thing you need for a big "pro" event is pro players. I'm on the record with my belief that pro players and a pro tour do little if anything to grow the sport, but if you are going to have pro events the pro players are obviously vital to that. The people organizing this are in SC; USDGC was just there. You would think they would have had meetings and discussions with the big-time pro players getting them on board with this event instead of rolling it out with a list of invited players and a "45 days to register" deadline for something the players don't know anything about. From the reaction I've heard, what they did was the latter. If it ends up on ESPN with none of the top players there, what does that do for anybody?

It just strikes me as kinda weird. If McBeth has already said he isn't going, that takes the top player in the game out right off the top. If they don't do something and get a solid base of top players lined up, it's going to fall flat no matter how nice the production is.

A similar argument could be made for Jussi's World Tour. The only people who have committed to the tour are Paul McBeth and Simon Lizzotte who work for Jussi. No else really cares about the WDGTour. The only reason they will get the top pros is because Jussi has piggy backed on an established tour stop. How many top North American pros will be at Konopiste, Czech Republic?

Heck today I announce the "Totally Bull**** NA Tour" with stops at Glass Blown Open, USDGC, Masters Cup and Green Mountain Champs. Players will collect points and a winner will be announced at the end. Who will get more top pros TBNATour or the WDGTour?

Who will get more 1000 rated players? the WDGT stop in Konopiste, Czech Republic or the American Open?

Shouldn't there be some sort of trademark or copyright disclaimer on the ESPN logo on the website? Even if they are involved with ESPN you can't just plaster that logo can you?

If the agreement we've seen in pictures is legit, it likely contains permission to use the logo in event promotional materials. So on that front, they're probably okay.

What I find really curious is that they're giving the invitees only 45 days to sign up, but aren't promising details of the tournament (save for time and place) until January which is after the 45 days expire. Seems backwards to me. If I were an invited player, I'd want to know more about the event before I agree to cough up $300.

For one, no tournament I'm aware of has ever charged such a high entry fee...USDGC is ~$230 or so. Worlds is usually in the same $200 range. So for such an extravagant price, I'm expecting something that exceeds those events in quality. But at this point, there's no way to know if they are even promising that level of quality. Such a blind leap of faith to sign up for this event.

Also would love to know how they arrived at their list of invited players. I have my suspicions, but considering they seem to want to disavow the PDGA, it would be hypocritical of them, IMO, to use anything PDGA-related (ratings, world rankings, NT points, etc) to determine invitations.

Those experiences are usually built upon the backs of very experienced TD's and clubs, with an army of volunteers. Though those things might be in the works, not much has been said about them. The task seem daunting, but really...only time will tell.

So has there been any confirmation that any actual top-tier pros are playing in this thing?

I thought that they had said that any on if the invitees had their registration fee waved, maybe I misunderstood that. Wouldn't that mean that they could register, at no out of pocket cost, just in case it is legit?

If one signs up for the event ($300), they become members of the ADGT at no additional charge.

"Any pros participating/registering in the American Open receive gratis admission into the American Disc Golf Tour for the inaugural season."

Otherwise, it costs $80 for pros, $55 for ams, and $20 for juniors.

I believe it says their membership fee is waived, not their entry.

Edit: beaten to the punch

The membership fee is waived. Still have to pay the 300 entry, but you don't have to pay to "join"

I don't think the 300 entry is that terrible really. The problem is that there is no garunteed payout structure. It would be different if a PDGA A tier or higher was charging that much, as you are definitely getting 100% of net entry fees paid out. No such promises here, so it's a while different cost benefit calculation because there is a huge risk in playing an event without a set payout structure.

The 45 days to register thing screams scam to me.

Well it's not the top 20 PDGA ranked women, Holly is 19 and she did't get an invite. It would be interesting to know what criteria was used.
