High Desert Distance Challenge 2016

Any other footage besides the instagram.. Man, I'm hoping someone has been filming with some good glass and not just smartphones.

The fact there are no environmental conditions to qualify shows that this competition needs to mature. When gail force winds are needed to set the record there is something wrong with the competition.

Having shown this new video to non-disc golfers the response has been "meh"...

Id like all records to be set without wind or at least below a certain mph. Whats next downhill?

I think the 18-20 mph wind being ideal concept can be put to rest now-at least for really fast throwers. That wind was howling and looked constant. This record may stand for a long time unless conditions such as what we saw are common out there, and from what I've read, they aren't.

What was the wind speed? Who said it was over 20? I believe Sandstrom's was set at 25 mph but it was argued cause it was brief and not the steady 18-20 they had most of the day.

Isn't that what they do with track and field events? I seem to recall for a time on an event like the 400m to qualify for a world record the wind has to be below a certain level?

While I find this toss to be rather unbelievable I would like to see some sort of standards applied to the conditions for an "official" record. Otherwise it'll be downhill in a hurricane for the next attempt - well not really but you get what I mean haha.

When you said you showed to non golfers and the response was meh. I believe it! We need better footage, aerial camera etc.

This could be badass for any viewing audience if it is marketed proper meaning professional footage not smartphone from a hundred feet away-who would think much of anything filmed in that manner?

I really think we could change paradigms's with this long drive stuff. Ask any non golfer what ya think a long frisbee drive would be and their almost always surprised with the distances pros get.

I remember my old girlfriend in complete disbelief when she saw me empty my bag out in a field..

Cant find accurate reading from yesterday for the exact area but it sounds like winds are howling. The NWS has issued a wind advisory through Tuesday.

Winds: West to Southwest winds 30 to 45 mph with gusts 50 to 65 mph. Gusts could exceed 70 mph in the Spring Mountains.

It was 30 when he released it.

I understand the conversation about the wind assisting it and maybe not making it legit, but let me say this: I was out there watching him do it. Yes, the wind plays a factor, but everyone going for the record is on the same playing field. Also, there is insane skill involved in being able to navigate the wind. For the one Lizotte 900 footer, there were a hundred other throws that held the anhyzer too long and rolled over, or got caught by the tailwind and became too overstable. It's not all catching the wind with a throw. Precision is key.

As for video, you'd need a drone or some high quality cameras to film this properly, and there just isn't the big money involved in this at this point.

There is, however, the written word. Not as flashy or instant, but still gives some greater insight than the video. Check it: http://ultiworld.com/2016/03/27/lizotte-sets-new-wfdf-distance-record/

With that wind especially and not being able to see the flight of the discs at all, even to me it's just meh..

I've been to a long distance competition at Worlds and that was impressive to watch. Players throwing max distance drives on flat ground, much shorter distances in comparison but to me it was more impressive/realistic.

The distance comp out on the salt flats is cool, for what it is.

The wind speed is even higher up wherethe disc was riding given the trajectory of the disc being so far from a flat normal ground where the flags were. I believe whats referred to as the friction layer breaks up at just 30' of rise.

Ya a small sport that struggles to get spectators will breakthrough to the masses if we get good video of ppl praying for the right wind gust to carry their disc, when the diehards don't even seem to care too much, all because your old gf was amazed at how far you can throw your entire bag. I think we should send footage of you crushing to the ESPN.

With all this talk of people being meh and there not being video, it disappoints me. Wish more people could be there in person to witness how truly special it was. The whole vibe among 35 people changed for that 10 seconds of flight. I feel fortunate to have been there, because it seems to be something that you need to experience first hand to appreciate.

I dont think you get the point.

Yes this record is very cool for us dg nerds! Throwing in a tailwind like that is very hard [i hate it actually on disc golf lines] but does nothing to excite anyone outside of this niche sport IMO. Hes throwing as high in the air as some people drive lol.

There seems to be a general meh attitude towards this competition. I for one would have LOVED the chance to see this first hand. The longest throw I've seen in person is about 500 feet. And it looked amazing. To add 400 to that seems almost impossible, even with the wind.

Eh ive seen what i think was a 16 yr old kid throw just shy of 600' on flat ground at BRP driving range hole with no wind help. It was much more of a jaw dropper vs this shot honestly seeing those gusts. Hell i threw a 138g fission tesla nearly 450' the other day with just a 15mph tailwind and thats not my normal D at all nor was it 150' into the air on a true max D line like simon has perfected for the competition.

Just because a couple people on here have showed it to their friends and gotten a meh response doesn't mean that's the whole of the experience. We've had a lot of good feedback from the ultimate scene, and plenty of people I've shared this with have been impressed. So maybe the video is boring, but I think people of all walks can appreciate the feat.

Is it going to move the mainstream needle and be on ESPN? No, but that doesn't need to be the aim of every event. Let's just appreciate it for still being amazing. We don't need to be jaded about this.

And everyone was crushing all day. You should make the trip next time if it's publicized better. It's pretty cool. They just keep it low key for permitting purposes, but I think it could be bigger if someone is willing to take on organizing it as a larger event.

Innova has the means to make it an event.....

No one would show up to make it worth a damn just like tourney spectating. Whatever done making my point but general public doesnt give a F. Specially in winds like that.....

Why worry about the general public? Disc golfers know what it takes. Why isn't that enough?
