2019 Pros Switching Sponsors Official Thread

On the business side, I am also unsure how much better he will do. The custom discs don't sell merely because they have a name on them. The KC Pro Roc never sold a single disc because of the name. It was because either the mold was already good and the only one available was a pro model (champ teebirds) or the new pro model substantially changed the disc in some way (McPro Aviars).

If McBeth thinks he can slap his name on a Nuke and sell thousands by default I think he will be sorely disappointed. Of course if Discraft comes out with new molds or variations for him it could work out (although I question whether Discraft will have any ROI from the McBeth name stamped on them vs selling the new disc hype).

Dude yeah they do

This also means CCDG can do another 'retro' challenge with Discraft players using old school molds or ultra-stars.

Hope someone has the hook up on some collectibles. Discraft would be much better off paying CCDG and Jomez to film some promotional vids with discs that are available on their website and on-sale with a coupon code listed in the video.

@Ian hook a brother up with some swag :)

I agree with this to a point. Innova loves to have fun, but I'm seeing this on a lot of websites, except there is nothing on the PDGA's website. Something this big would be front and center there. Innova's official is not, offical-offical.

We haven't exactly done player/sponsor news on the PDGA website in the past (although I am hoping to change that eventually). We did share it on our social media platforms.

Honestly curious of your opinion of why this clearly didn't happen. Innova either didn't match or Paul didn't give Innova a match option. Of course this assumes he is going to another company, not going to be sponsored or retiring.

I think Innova didn't match. I think Paul wanted them to, because it's obviously easier from a practical standpoint to not make the move if it's not necessary...but that's me reading a little between the lines. In a text Paul told me he felt that, "they [Innova] underestimated their competition". I'm pretty sure at this point Paul got multiple offers from Innova. I don't know if Paul ever directly leveraged promises made by DC or not, or kept it intentionally vague, maybe he'll share details on that eventually.

I have a theory on why I think Innova was reluctant to match, but it's based on some rumors about what Paul will be getting with "whatever new company he goes to (Discraft)", so I want to wait and try to confirm some new contract details before I go that far out on the limb.

Who knows, maybe Innova will weigh in on their thought process if the contract details become public...

Regardless of disc sponsor, I strongly believe McBeast will be carrying a Grip bag again. My evidence is the Nicholas Carl 'In the Bag' that Paul shared where Nicholas mentions having Paul's loaned 3x bag with plans to give it back to him.

This would not surprise me. From my understanding, one big concession for Paul in getting the 3 year deal after 2015 was that he'd have to rep their (upcoming at that time) backpack bag (HeroPack). I'm not sold on the idea that he ever loved the bag itself, but he was seemingly able to leverage more value out of that concession than if he had refused and continued to rep Grip Eq.

You know, I get the skepticism when the rumor first broke. I didn't get the all in, bet everything I own claims it wouldn't happen. Of course it could happen. I had no idea if it would, but to just flat out say no way was silly IMO.

However, the crazy denial that is going on by a few now, really confuses me. What more do you want? Innova announced it, Ian has confirmed it, Ultiworld has reported it, and Hanna McBeth has addressed it on her IG account.

Yes, it would be nice for Paul and Discraft to put something out, but again, through 12/31/2018 he is under contract to Innova.

Something I hope they learn from. Pros aren't going to want to rep a cheap bag. Which is good because neither do I. Pro golfers carry very high end bags with their sponsor stitched on.

You're going to sell plastic based on Paul's previous performance, period.

Again, numbers. I don't deny this, but are you arguing that the numbers will justify? And who are you selling to? Innova fans, Discraft fans, newbies? Seems a reach to me to think you're gonna beat his numbers with Innova.

Trilogy team members are required to rep Zuca and/or Ogio.

Trilogy team members ain't Paul McBeth.

Backend contract obligations to those companies and that's fine but it's a symptom of a problem in the sport due to it's small size.

Pros need money to tour and therefor need money to come from sponsorships. Brands need money to offer to pros beyond what they can produce with their own sales. Brands need companies to make items for their own merchandise too. Brands leverage pros as tagalong advertising to said companies. It's the most efficient use of resources for all parties.

Paul was on the right track getting Addias in the mix directly. I expect another deal like this to be signed in 2019 for him.

I hear that Paul is going with a mixed bag because of the putter he wants.

Quest Turbo Putt!

He's going to get it re-approved. Now that he's no longer with Innova is not a cheater disc anymore!

I predict that he'll be nailing putts from outside circle 2, standstill, no longer will he have to worry about jump-putt foot faults! In fact that will be the tag line - Putt like me and eliminate jump-putt foot faults and Monday morning quarterbacks over the interwebs!

I really don't think it works like this, or maybe I just HOPE it doesn't work like this.

Disc golf discs are not a commodity, they have unique characteristics that make them more or less suited for individual players. There is no fashion aspect, nobody is showing off their sweet new McBeth destroyer like they would a pair of Jordans.

But if course the millennial brain is a damaged and confusing thing. Maybe they actually do purchase discs like a fashion accessory.

I'm still amazed at this notion that Paul's name on Discraft discs is going to generate oodles of sales. Can I get some guesses?

I understand that his name is going to sell more discs, but I just don't see how it works. Enlighten me.

Let's assume that the relative numbers $8 mm vs $52 mm relate to actual disc sales. That means Innova is moving six discs for every one of Discraft's, generally speaking. Are we expecting that Discraft numbers are going up? Are those new sales, or are they cannibalized sales, are they stealing from Innova or some other manufacturer? Is the expectation that Discraft is gonna catch Innova in sales? Or will it be something more modest? Are folks gonna just buy new discs, and a lot of them, based on this move? If you make DiscPaul discs are you gonna canniblalize other Discraft sales, or are you gonna get all new customers? What conversion rate does Discraft expect? How many from Tri, how many from Innova?

Innova folks, how many of you are following Paul? How many of you are converting your bag? How many of you are going to go out of your way to try one of these discs? How many would take one if given one and if it flew good, would move an Innova product that flew the same, out of your bag?

Discraft fans, are you expecting something dynamically new? Something no one has ever seen before, longer, better?

BTW - I often think Sonic is overboard, but I think he's thinkin' a lot clearer than some are.

I agree it isn't good for the touring pros. I was just passing that tidbit along. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Discraft might start tying in Grip bags to their sponsorship. I mean, if I was Grip and made these Buzzz bags for Discraft and then looked at their sponsored players repping competitors bags, I'd be pissed.

Oh, I forgot, Tri fans, how many of you now think Paul is awesome, and Ricky stinks and you're going to move to Discraft so you can play his plastic?
