Roadtripping the Northeast 9-24/9-29

Not to step on any toes... but... how is it that Brakewell/Warwick, one of the top 20 courses in the nation in one of the most densely populated areas in the world, doesn't have any guides?

I'm off to check out the Skylands forums.

PM Toothyfish its his home course..he would probably love to show you around...real nice guy...might be still injured but he's a local of Warwick....BTW despite being in the middle of NY/NJ Warwick is a rural area and not well populated.

in NY...I d play nearby Joralemon Park over Central Park...flat course with grassy park half and fun woods half....

You're DEFINITELY missing out if you don't play J-Park. Read Opti's review(and others) before you make your final decision. The full 27 hole loop would take more time to play so if you're planning to drive afterwards, you may want to choose one of the 18 hole loops there(J-East 18 is the better one).

I see you're headed to Black Falls for the Monday AM round. You're gonna have a tough choice to make once you get there. 2 blocks up the road is Cherry Hill. 18 more MUST-PLAY holes!!!

Warwick doesn't really need a guide. Great signage and there's ALWAYS someone playing to show you around.

I'm going to skip Joralemon, I've had like 6 people recommend it over Central Park, but I'm sure I'll make another loop through New England in the next few years, so I can get it in then.

From reading descriptions, Black Falls seems like it's a little easier than Cherry Hill, that's what made me choose it. I'm an intermediate player at best, and while I enjoy a challenge as much as the next guy, I don't go out of my way to play difficult courses on road trips.

Haha State Bagger....I say go for Ninigret and play nearby new niner Strawberry in Conn...you can be the courses first reviewer! Going where no player has gone before!

Don't worry about strawberry I'll be there on 10/12 to take the honors.

Making some last minute modifications to the end of my trip because the wife wants me to be done by Tuesday night. So, if you have to pick one course for an intermediate player, do you pick Maple Hill or Brakewell/Warwick? I'm leaning towards Warwick as Maple is probably a little more advanced. What say you?

Play Warwick u can get on 80 right after and be on your way home. Maple Hill is awesome but 6 of the holes play over deeeeeep blackwater ponds. Also Warwick is far more forgiving and from the shorter tees plays a bit easier than maple from the shorts. Both r awesome but if u play maple u really should play pyramids which is literally across the street. Sounds like save maple and pyramids for another trip

Greg, have a great trip ! Should be sensational driving in NE, with the start of fall colors. Only a diehard state bagger could put Vermont in the rear view mirror this time of year.

Thanks, but you have me a little concerned now... is there something going on in northern Vermont that I don't know about? The weather seems fine, lows between 40-50 and highs around 65-70. I can't imagine enduring a chilly morning would make me a diehard. :)

hit our first course yesterday and played Sedgley Woods in Philadelphia. not bad, multiple tees, some "holes" will get flamed when I review later.

Greg,

This came up in the other thread about the Rochester/Buffalo area. Beaver is doing some park renovations so some of the course is a construction zone. You might want to swap that out for one of the other area courses.

Thanks for the heads up, I should have been following along with that thread. If I get some time this afternoon I'll post my updated itinerary.

fixed for you:thmbup:

fyi...sunset on the east coast is before 7p now, you might be playing Chili in the dark.

I'm about halfway through my trip now and I wanted to take a couple of minutes to thank those who have helped me out so far.

Chestnut Ridge: A construction guy (whose name I can't remember) and his two little sons showed me around the back nine here then helped me find the front nine. Turns out that he's well connected to the course, as he's the one who donated the lumber to build the many bridges on the course. One of the kids (the smaller of the two, maybe seven years old?) has a monster forehand.

Widener and Parma: the incomparable timg. he showed me around and even took me to a sweet local burger place (whose name I can't remember). If you visit Central NY and don't try to meet up with Tim, you're missing out. His hospitality is unparalleled.

Oxbow: As I was driving up to the course this morning, I saw three guys teeing off from 18. They saw me go up to the map/messageboard like a complete tourist and asked if I'd like to play a round with them. Greg, Don, and Scott (and later Don's brother) gave me a first class tour of the course, and since they were preparing the course for next week's tournament, they had hand saws and clippers to trim up any brush I happened to throw into. Truly a great bunch of guys.

Central: Michigan Jeff and his wife (who name I can't remember) showed me around here. It's an extremely well laid out course considering it plays through a crowded city park. We only had to wait on a guy walking a dog (or maybe a buffalo, seriously, it was a big dog) once.

Thanks again to these folks, and to the folks I'll meet in the next couple of days. Your love of disc golf and desire to help others make road trips like mine incredibly enjoyable.
