I'm gonna be in Dallas and planning on heading down to San Marcos. I see there are a number of high rated courses on the way but wondering what the must plays are. Wooded gets preference.

Really wanna hear from everyone but @Pizza God and @aclay for sure.

The four must-plays on your trip from DFW to San Marcos are:
-- Brazos Park East (The Beast) in Waco.
-- Cameron Park in Waco.
-- Rivery in Austin.
-- Williamson County (Wilco) in metro Austin.

All are rated 3.5 or higher and will give you the wooded holes. The Beast is open on the front 9 but makes up for it on the back. I hear really mixed opinions on Austin Ridge Bible Church in Austin, but I have not played it.

Of course, your final destination at Flying Armadillo will be a blast and give you fun AND woods golf.

Ok, From Dallas

Waco - The bEast is the best course. Although I do enjoy playing Cameron park too.
(stop at Buc-ee's)
Temple/Belton - Crossroads is decent and a LOT of holes.
Heritage Park Extension is good, was hole of a Silver Event of the DGPT till it moved to Austin last year.
Heritage Oaks - It's rough, but has some really good holes.

Then you get into the Austin area.
Sprinkle Valley is my first choice and I have not played it yet.
Other courses all worth playing
Rivery Park - on the short side but has some fun to throw holes.
Benbrook Ranch - new redesign my Mike Olse, has some challenging holes for sure.
Williamson County (WilCo) - Fun rec course that is popular
Old Settlers Park - Mostly a John Houck course that got changed up, has some great holes.
Wells Branch - Short fun course that is very popular with the locals
East Metro Park - Early Mike Olse course, heard it recently got cleaned up
Bartholomew - Oldest course still in the ground in Texas
Austin Ridge Bible Church - John Houck course that is tough
Roy G - Recent redesigned by Mike Olse, have not played the new layout yet
MetCenter - Redesigned by Mike Olse a couple of years ago, it's good, but mostly open bomber course.
Circle C - My personal favorite course in Austin
Searight - Sometimes set up backwards as Seawrong, this is a popular wooded course not too hard.
Dreamland - Call to make sure it's available. Its sort of wooded, almost dessert course. I keep hearing rumors it was going to get pulled or redesigned. I really enjoyed playing it.
The Ranch - It's on UDisc, owner would not let me upload it here. its a "invitation only" course where you either have to play on an open day, or know Jamie who lives on the property. It's a championship level course. lots of bombers and OB lines everywhere.
Swordstone - Another private "country club" course that you would need to find a member to escort you to play. Or play an event out there when it's open. Issues with people sneaking in and not paying greens fee's and not taking care of the property caused them to make the course members only.

i only played a handful in the area

only ones i would go back to is the bible church johnny h designed (and i would easily go back to flying armadillo)

and flying armadillo has a respectable big boi course too but the short one is so much fun i would rather play that on repeat

(stop at Buc-ee's)

A must since I first stepped foot in one last time. Idaho takes their gas stations seriously (shout out to Mavericks) but Buc-ee's is a serious gas station, love that place! Beaver nuggets! mmmmm

There is a new Buc-ee's opening soon in Hillsboro. But you will pass the one in Temple.

Oh, I added the Springfield MO one, this is an older picture.

love nuggets! mmmmm

We know, and Bjork.

Might've paraphrased a bit but what am I supposed to do?

In all seriousness we drove past one of those things at it was the craziest shit I've ever seen. SOOO many pumps. I've heard the muskrat curds are good though.

Did you go in? It's like a Costco in there, in a freaking gas station. They have their own brand food, BBQ with brisket in there fresh made, that place is awesome.

We didn't. I really should have though. Even just for the Beaver nuggets.

Don't overlook Woodway (Lakeside Park) when you're in the Waco area; its a little gem of a course in a beautiful setting.
