Disc Golf World Tour

The SpinTV summary was better than Jamie has done before, he's still not Terry, but he was palatable. I think I understand why they used Metrix, but they should have called at a Matrix, it is the correct term, and then they could have used the music from the Matrix, JMO. Also, they need to get a better photographer for the bio-pics, some of those were a tad goofy.

Paul McBeth is scary, someone needs to shove a cupcake in his face, and even that wouldn't slow him down. My kid worships him as a superstar, and he doesn't even like sports.

Honestly, hope the producers are making money at this, it is by far the most professional presentation of the sport I've seen, very pleased, and thanks.

Ran some quick stats hole by hole - excluded the small number of folks who posted a +10 or higher, so a data set of the top 100 players.

Looks like holes 14 and 10 could be tweaked to be a bit harder, hole 11's tee could be moved up a bit, and holes 9 and 17 (as probably expected with island greens) have feast-or-famine distributions. The rest look like pretty good golf holes, statistically.

I actually don't mind #14 and #10. A couple 50/50 holes (among the top 100) might not separate among the Top 20, but they theoretically help sort out a broader field. No?

What kind of p-value do you have for the correlation to score overall and score on #14 and #10? I actually don't know what I just asked right there.

#11 looks horrible, so I agree with making it shorter. Or longer. Unless there is significant risk/reward for trying to make that "birdie", which apparently there isn't(?), it's not good.

Hell, send it to feminist media outlets.

I'd be curious how this was received by an outlet like Jezebel. There are some things to be said for Catrina being the only woman playing, and not all of those things are positive. So I'd be curious to see what kind of shine an outlet outside of the sport would put on the situation.

I'm assuming you meant to say that you would be curious to see how this WOULD be received by Jezebel IF they caught wind of it, not that they have already.

If, for some reason, a Gawker site had picked up a DGWT event, I think the DGWT organizers would have to consider that a publicity grand slam.

Congrats to Catrina for breaking into the boys' club

I would reduce the field further for stats in either of two ways. Either include everyone from 970 and higher rating since their average rating is gold level 1000. Or even better, break it into black (1020+) and gold (975-1024) groups and see if some holes work better for gold or black level even though there are only 11 black level players. [Rico and Nybo are "Steelers" at 1023 (Black & Gold)].

Just caught the SpinTV recap show of Round 1. Pretty slick. Observations:

3) I know it was Thursday but I saw 0 spectators. LaMi is gorgeous and historically significant, etc. but it's in the middle of an average, medium-density residential neighborhood in a cultural no-man's land between Los Angeles & Orange Counties, and it's an hour's drive from anywhere in Los Angeles. Until we locate good courses into city centers, you can forget about any significant numbers of randoms coming out to watch. I'm interested to see if media day involved any actual local media and if it results in any actual non-disc golf playing randoms coming out to watch.

.

There was actually a significant amount of people out there following mcbeth's card around. even on the first day.

My view is that all the players paid the same and are competing, so the course should work for all of them. Besides, if there is a ragged bottom of players who don't have a chance, they generally have a wider range of skills, so any course will rank them appropriately. Essentially, if it works for all, it works for the top end.

So, here is a graph on how the holes performed for all players. Higher, Righter, and Bigger are Gooder.

Only have time at the moment for 970+, but I'll take a look at the other groupings later:

Code:

That's old school thinking, Steve - that everyone has to play the same holes so it doesn't matter how good they are for specific skill levels. We need more precise analysis on designing for skill levels and not just fancier charts. We don't really care whether holes on a temporary tournament setup for Open are good or bad for those below that skill level. Including lower level player scores which likely widens scoring spread may make the holes look better than they really are for high level players who happen to all get the same score on a hole.

Scoring Spread Width alone does not tell a sufficient story for holes like 9 & 17 which have the weak two-peaked distribution where only a small percentage shot par on those holes.

Yes, this. Pre-coffee DGCRing is not advised. Should have said I would be curious to see how it would be received. But you're right, the PR coup there would be huge.

¿Porque no los dos?

(Sp.: "Why not both?")

I think there is a little bit of both to this. I'm interested in finding out why the one-division concept was so important to the tour. Hoping Jussi will talk to me a little more about it after the event.

Interesting chart. but hole 1 is probably the least interesting hole to watch as a spectator. The chart looks like it is the best hole on the course.

There was actually a significant amount of people out there following mcbeth's card around. even on the first day.

That's great news. Numbers should only swell for rounds 2 & 3. I just wonder how many more people would attend if it was anywhere near DTLA or the west side.

Thought they did a great job with the vid. Would like to point out that all that footage was shot by CCDG :) (except the Simon clips)

Catrina with an eagle 2 (along with two other players currently) on hole 4 which some think should perhaps be a par 3? Or are those scores not on the correct hole?
