Hey everyone, The family and I are doing some Griswolding to Florida and back and wanted to know of any suggestions on don't miss courses? Planning on playing a few courses around Orlando and cocoa beach. Was looking for something along the 95 corridor that's worth stopping at probably gonna stay a night or so depending on what else is in area.
Thanks for any replies.

Where from, what route?

Near Savannah, GA, are two fine courses---The Sarge, and Tom Triplett. They are on either side of the SC/GA line, and both have the virtues of being virtually on the exit ramp (very convenient to stop).

In Orlando, Turkey Lake is a great place to play. Two 18 holers, both with 9-hole loops from the parking lot, so you can mix-&-match. More importantly, it's peaceful, on a lake in a limited-access park. When you're on a Disney vacation, quiet time is invaluable.

Sorry I forgot to say where we're traveling from. We're heading out from NJ. Planning on stopping near Charleston SC. So anywhere in between is an option. Maybe a place with some cool hiking near it, or really good bbq! Turkey lake and river city are on the list. Were staying around the Winter Haven area. and planning on being in Cocoa beach and Everglades Ntnl park. Thanks for the replies!

My recommendations if you get down to the southern part of Florida would be Estero on the west coast and Jet Stream on the east.

If you play river city, hit up the clubs FB page. Always something going on out there.

What about Alligators?

I am also making a trip to Orlando next month and I plan to make a trip over to Tampa.

Which courses in Tampa are a must play if I only have time for one or three? I thought I wanted to play Cliff Stephens because it has been KC's home course for many years. However, DGCR rates both Picnic Island and Taylor Park higher than Cliff Stephens. Cypress Point is also top rated for the area.

I prefer to play courses that are easy to navigate and/or play alone.

Also, do they put up signs when there are alligators in the water or should I assume all water hazards in Florida have alligators?

I am also going on vacation December 12 - 16. My wife and I plan to play Cliff & Coachman sometime during the week. Let me know if you would like a guide or some company to check out Cliff.

I think Cliff may be my favorite in Tampa area. However, it is very close with Picnic Isle & Cypress point. I would put those as my top 3. Taylor is only slightly behind.

Cliff has some decent variety of shots, gators in the pond and yes, you never know who you may run into at Cliff. I have seen K.C. there, McBeth and K$ also a number of times.

Cypress is also a K.C. design and I have seen him there as well. Cypress has the longest throws of the area courses and is also close to the beach but does not have any baskets on the beach.

Picnic has 2 throws on the actual beach. However, is a bit of an in between course for me. The long tees are too hard for my wife and I and some of the short tees are too easy so not quite my favorite.

Taylor starts with some fun variety of shots but finishes with a lot of the same shots under tall pine trees back and forth.

In my opinion you cannot go wrong with any of these choices. Looks at the pictures, check some youtube videos and hit up what looks most fun for you.

In Orlando Turkey Lake is a must play. Ocala is also just up the road from Orlando and I love Ocala Greenway and Pine Oaks.

I grew up in Florida, and still get down there somewhat regularly.

More lakes and canals in So Fla don't have signs indicating there could be gators than do. Realistically, they could be in any body of fresh or brackish water. Chances of actually encountering one during a round are fairly slim, but I wouldn't wade into murky water groping for a disc.

When it comes to discing and gators, I suggest a Disc Gator (pun not really intended) with the 11' tent pole extension...it'll pay for itself over time. Will try to provide a link.

So we ended up playing at River city in Debary and at Turkey Lake. Really enjoyed both courses. wished I had more time to play the alternate courses at both places. Turkey lake just added a third course. We only played the original course. Almost got closed in the park didn't realize the park closes at five. Debary was a great course also and the locals were very friendly. We were playing slowly and let a couple parties play through and everyone was real helpful with navigating the course. They were getting ready for a tournament on the weekend so it was in great shape. would really like to get back and spend more time at both of these courses.

Glad you had fun. I agree with you on River City alpha... really a fun course.

My favorite Tampa area courses would be:

1. Medard
2. Cliff Stevens
3. Taylor
4. Cypress
5. Picnic

Dang. Hope that you have another week off to recover!

Sounds like an eventful trip. I've only played at one of those courses, the first one--Pineoaks. It's a long course, but somewhat boring imo. In Ocala, I think the best course is Greenway. Have you played it before?

He has played it before (as have I) and it's one of his favorite FL courses. It is also in my FL top 10.

Yes, by Ocala I think the hope is to play all 3 that day if my wife is able to wake up early enough. Sawmill is a fast play, Greenway may take up to 3 hours then we will do Pine Oaks last and zip around on golf carts saving our tired legs
