[Gateway] New Gateway driver or 80's thrash metal band?-Slayer

have you seen this disc? thrown this disc? know what it does? no. close thread.

He disagrees with the idea that faster discs are detrimental to advancing the general skill level of disc golfers. He doesn't have to throw it, touch it, or have any contact with it.

At the OP: I'm sure it would help everyone, people on this site and the Gateway included, if you suggested things they do better instead of just talked about what they've done wrong. There is a place for telling someone they've done something wrong, but that place isn't teh interwebs.

And for the record, I am not saying what you did was wrong. I'm simply saying there is something more helpful to do.

No sane person would say "hey, all those brand new warp speeds are selling extremely well, so lets do something else."
This is necessary for Gateway to stay competitive.

somebody gets it. if disc companies were in the business of making everyone who ever bought a disc happy they would be out of business. gateway has to answer to their investors... not people on this forum.

if high speed drivers make more money because the increasing amount of newer players to the game run out and buy high speed discs then that's what they HAVE TO SELL.

you've got your putter.. quit complaining. if you want to make a statement about the inconsistency of gateway discs then stop buying them; gather more people to join your cause; petition them to work on it. when they see enough people coming together to complain they'll change things.

you're like the people who bitch about the government yet never vote, never write or call their representative, never organize likeminded people to advance your cause.

I actually picked up 2 prototypes of this disc last week from gateways ebay store. I haven't had a chance to throw them yet but I'll post some pictures in a bit. I won the auction with an opening bid of $9.99 (which was the minimum bid), figured what the heck i'll give them a shot.

there are protos in the gateway store in st. louis and the guy at the store told me they fly somewhat similar to his destroyer. idk how many more they have left though. i picked one up just to see what it felt like and it had a really good grip imho. very grippy. i just wish they could make drivers out of the plastic they use to make putters. that would be very cool

proto pics

I've attached some pics of the proto, sorry if they are not that great, the dog wanted to make off with the disc (she thinks they are all her toys)

Everyone seems to be arguing or adding their $.02 ... so here's mine: Slayer is thrash, not speed :p

Well if you are a thrash metal band, doesn't that pretty much make you also a speed metal and hardcore metal band by default? Isn't thrash pretty much a combination of the two, or am I missing the subtle nuisance of thrash metal?

True, thrash was derived from a combination of speed and hardcore punk ... but Slayer is most definitely a thrash metal band.

The Map of Metal defines the differences between the two quite well.

A lot of people like the meathook Gateway discs i.e. Spirit and Speed Demon. Other than those I don't see many Gateway drivers.

I hope it turns out to be a hit. Gateway doesnt pull in the same amount of cash as Innova and Discraft. If they could pull off a couple of great discs that sell well maybe they could get thier plastic from a consistant supplier which would help with disc consistancy. They have great putters and a few other molds that if they could mold up well on a consistant basis they could grow the company. I would rather see them succeed than root for them to fail. People want drivers so give them drivers to raise capital to improve the manufacturing process.

I'm not rooting for them to fail. If Gateway went out of business, where would I get Wizards from? :p

I like thier putters and some of thier mids. I think the Scout was a win just that most people probably wont give it a shot. The warrior is a nice mid as well making a Scout Warrior mid combo a great set up. I dont see Gateway growing as fast as say a Lat64 because they cant seem to come up with drivers that make people talk in a positive way about the company.

You have to remember that Gateway is an older company. For a while they were out in front of the big winged driver wars. When the Edge protos were out with that big wing, the Innova-heads wailed like the sky was falling. It was quite a few years before Innova caught up to Gateway in terms of the big winged drivers. The problem for Gateway was that all their big winged drivers were meathooks like the Speed Demon and Spirit. So they had a disc to compete with the Monster or Max, but nothing to compete with a Wraith. When they accidentally made some flippy Illusions, those things were coveted. If they could have consistently re-created the baby blue Illusions, they would have been on to something. They couldn't. The Inferno was another discs that possibly could have fit that need, but when Gateway and Quest split they lost the Inferno. So now here we are five or so years later, and Gateway is falling farther and farther behind. They misfired last year with the Ninja. So people are skeptical because over those years there has been a lot of bluster from Gateway that they were working on a new driver, but it's never turned out to be the disc people were looking for. The Apache was a nice driver if you were looking for something to compete with the SL, but not if you were looking for an answer to the Destroyer.

As far as the market goes, this is a disc Gateway needs to be successful get back in the driver race. Whether they need to be in the driver race given the success they have had with their putters is a valid question, though. They seem to be doing fine without a warp-speed driver.

I'm thinking Nikko had quite a bit of input on this one. I've heard him say "If they only made something like a Destroyer..."

I do think Gateway needs this...There are too many new companies popping up with multiple molds and better plastics. If they don't get their things in order they won't even be in the top 10 disc golf companies in 5 years.

Evidently Lightning went out of business. That's the rumor, anyway. It's not like they made a big "going belly up" announcement or anything. Anyway, that was always the fallback. We would say if Lightning is still in business, Quest or Gateway or whoever should be safe. You can't say that anymore.

Lightning never had a disc like the Wizard, though.

I tend to agree that they need this driver to be something that sticks in Nikko's bag. The "mixed bag" sponsorship is a pretty transparent spin on a weak line-up; at some point they need to get Nikko an all GDS bag he can compete with.

i dont think nikko needs to change from a mixed bag. hes place in the top 10 in every tourney that hes played in this year (as far as i know) and i think one reason for that is bc he has a mixed bag. he gets to use the best discs from every company. he has gateway putters, a 2nd 1st run buzzz, and a bunch of destroyers. but on top of that, he does have gateway drivers and mids that he uses quite often, such as the blaze and demon. i do agree gateway needs to step up their driver consistency and catch up to what innova and discraft and now lat 64 have done in recent years, but i doubt gateway will want nikko to become a gateway only player. theyre getting good publicity from having the #1 player in the world use their discs and help develop discs with them.
