PDGA ratings are up. How'd you do?

There en-lies the problem. Open divisions are usually closely rated players (depends on the region to the ratings). Adv divisions are people that range from 935 to 1000. It's not truly "open" as it's not open to specific players that have cashed. The 970 and below clause was put in place to avoid MA1 players bagging, but here in Charlotte, with the talent level high in the Am pool, that rating would need to be higher to be effective.

Technically, MA1 is not 'open' to players registered as Pro *and* rated above 970..

Also, realistically the Open division at large PDGA events is just as broad as the MA1 division *can be*. For a NT-level event, you have players ~970 all the way up through 1045+, or a total spread of 75. (i.e. the equivalent of 1000-925).

Plus, I have yet to see an MA1 division that actually looks like 1000-930, ever. If the event is high tier, it looks like what I described above. If the event is small, a heck of a lot of those 950+ players are likely 'playing up', meaning your MA1 division is more realistically 890-950, or only a ~60 point spread.

Ratings are now updated at least 10 times per year. For 2013 events, ratings are scheduled to be updated on March 26th, April 23rd, May 21st, July 2nd, August 13th, October 1, October 22nd, November 19th and December 17th with the 2013 yearend update on January 28th, 2014 with any corrections in early February as needed.

when is the next update? is there seriously two updates in oct???

Playing your rating isn't bagging. I can't stand when people give people crap for this.

I agree that playing a division that is permitted by your rating, while actually performing at a higher level, but not moving up until your rating catches up to your new skill level, is not bagging. In that sense, playing your rating isn't bagging.

However, committing ratings manipulation to lower one's rating, or prevent it from rising, and then playing in the lower division as permitted according to that manipulated rating, is the very definition of bagging. In that sense, playing your rating is bagging.

Of course, most people don't use the word "bagger" properly, which I believe was your point. And I agree. But I do wish that ratings would track players' actual skill levels more accurately, and not be held down by year old round ratings. Others, however, feel that it is a just reward for players who improve to let them dominate the lower division for a while, without forcing them to move up as soon as they start winning the lower division. The accusations of "bagger" by other players are usually just peer pressure to get those recently improved players to move up.

^^Yes, play Rec. That's where all of the world's best disc golfers should start.

Maybe I'll slip in a quick ratings question here, instead of opening a new thread.

Results for an Aug 24 tournament just recently showed up on the PDGA web site. Maybe they were mailed in, instead of filed electronically?

http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/102073

Anyway, my real question: they have no round ratings.

Do we only get preliminary round ratings if the TD files the results electronically? If they're mailed in, do I have to wait for "official" ratings? Perhaps at the time of the next PDGA update?

Preliminary ratings only show up if the TD uploaded the results directly via the tournament manager. This is a completely separate process from submitting the results officially, whether submission is done electronically or by mail. If the TD did not upload results directly, then no ratings will show until the tournament is processed at the next ratings update. That appears to be the case here.

OK - interesting, but strange. Thanks for confirming my hunch.

I guess most of the time TD's submit via the tournament manager within a couple of days, and then we see the preliminary rankings for e.g. a few weeks (until the official report gets filed?). Then they disappear until the update.

But, if TD's don't submit via the tournament ranger, we get _no_ rankings until the update.

The update was originally scheduled for tomorrow but was pushed back due to scheduling issues with staff. They also wanted to have an update as close as possible just prior to the USDGC for the performance flight.

Maybe I'll slip in a quick ratings question here, instead of opening a new thread.

I dont' think this has nothing to do with how the TD report was filed. There are no ratings because the event has gone official (i.e. it is processed for the next ratings update). In this time between going official and the update, unofficial ratings are not visible. I thought Steve put a way to still see the ratings in this period, but I can't find that email.

To come back to the original recent post. And maybe this is related to my frustration, if they'd stuck to their original schedule I might be seeing the _official_ round ratings now.

Isn't this two updates in a row where they've moved the update at the last minute?

Or maybe they got one "correct" in the middle, and it's two out of three that they've moved?

Seems a little fishy. I don't suspect foul play, but it doesn't seem like a very smooth operation.

money lists and statistics have been updated but no new ratings and I don't remember seeing an update date listed anywhere. What's the word? Chuck feel free to chime in.

According the information you posted, the last ratings update was on August 13. According to my rating information, ratings were updated on that date.

Since the ratings were updated on that date what is fishy?? The next ratings update isn't for several weeks. I haven't seen any official announcement that they are going to delay the October 1st update. Have you??

Perhaps YOUR rating may not have been updated because the event(s) you played are not yet official??
