Am world BAGGERS

Wow 24 pages in one day, looks like the OP struck a nerve.

I agree with the OP. This isn't some local tourney sponsored by a random shop, it's the World Am Championship. They should be able to control who is in what bracket if they want to maintain some legitimacy.

By barring players that are otherwise eligible to compete, that makes it more legitimate?

There is no cap on amateur play. Period. There's nothing illegitimate about this guy playing at Worlds.

If this were a local tourney sponsored by a random shop, I think there'd be more reason to urge the guy to play in Open, even if he declined the cash. Big fish, small pond, etc.

But this is the Amateur World Championship...why shouldn't any amateur be allowed to compete for the title. The operative word is amateur, which is not relevant to skill level at all. It's only relevant to the compensation (or lack thereof) received for winning.

....it's the World Am Championship. They should be able to control who is in what bracket if they want to maintain some legitimacy.

A curious phrase. How is the World Am Championship more legitimate if you don't allow all Ams to compete?

Maybe to make things "more legitimate" in the way these posters are mentioning, there should be some official recognition of players that averaged the highest above their rating. Essentially, these posters are proposing a ratings cap (say at 960 or 975 or whatever....just no 1000 rated/hated players)......so then it basically boils down to who scores the highest above their rating for a week.

The "Performance Flight" at the USDGC provides an entire event based solely on this.....so maybe Worlds could offer something like this with similar qualifying criteria to be eligible for the award.

After all, golf is in essence a solo sport where you are playing against the course and against yourself.

Threads like this make me never EVER want to join the PDGA and play in sanctioned tourneys. I don't need this headache.

This sport is sooo stinking small we make the people who play "pro" pay an entry fee (that is correct - isn't it?). Think about that for a moment.

Pro (def.) Noun
A professional, esp. in sports: "a tennis pro".

Professional (def.) Noun
A person engaged or qualified in a profession

Profession (def.) Noun
1. A paid occupation, esp. one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification.
2. A body of people engaged in a particular profession

So suffice to say if you are "pro" you are making money at it or even earning a living off of it. If you aren't making money rather, shelling out large sums of cash for entry fees and aren't making enough to cover the expenses then you aren't "pro" IMHO - it's just an expensive hobby you happen to be really good at. All this to say methinks the PDGA definition of "pro" is a little...jacked up.

After 3 rounds, here is how the top 20 Performers versus their rating stack up (everyone qualifies....unlike how the Performance Flight works):

Pretty much on the head here. No one is saying the guy should be arrested.

Funny how he has the highest rating and is tied for 1st though lol.

cause 888 rated am world champions is great for the sport.

It is as great for the sport as a 999 rated am champ or a 777 am champ. Basically, crowning an am champ has a value to the sport so close to zero that they are all the same....if you round things off to the nearest 3 or 4 decimal places.

Am world champions mean nothing to the sport. They are just the best at being average.

I hope he melts down and gets crushed by someone rated 940 or so. That would be great.

How many of you all posting here could win Am Worlds? Maybe if you played the event instead of talking on the interwebz you'd feel differently about what an Am Champ "means" to the sport.
