Salient's Catalyst Medium Backpack

ok, is your disc bending when you take it out of the bag? this is definitely an important part to note for future bag runs

Yes, I have to bend it to take it out. Fortunately my left-most disc tends to be a Vibram, so it bend a bit, but mids don't bend all that well (especially if it's an MVP mid). In that case I have to use some bending (usually of the flight plate) along with twisting the disc up and over the top of the others and bending/stretching the bag a fair amount.

I get that discs can't slide in and out super easily, or else they'd fall out all the time, but the rounded edges kind of suck… as I thought they might. I prefer the square edges as on the Contender. The Catalyst could have used "less rounded" edges even if a true corner would have been awkward given the "standard" orientation of the zipper (the Contender of course zips the other way).

I completely agree iacas. I even asked Chris about that from the beginning and i can't remember if he said it had something to do with the go get it slot or the material...doubt the material but they had to go with the traditional U-shape flap. I loved the opening of the contender. Worse case i could put my utility drivers on the edges.

Just throwing this out there dg, but if you are able to get an extra bag, I would like to see it ABUSED.
I mean literally drug thru the mud, slammed against trees, thrown around on the pavement, that sort of thing.
I appreciate the pics and reviews so far, thanks to those who have contributed.

That is a good idea. I will see if Chris would be willing to do an abuse test. I am only receiving one catalyst for my personal uses and im gonna take care of it because it will be last bag i get for a long while. But that is a really good suggestion FixIt

Literally throw the bag under a bus... :hfive:

I want to see a video of grip just beating one of their own bags to death. If Salient did this, it may be a market first. :)

That would be a good use of any defective bags if they don't have to be returned to the manufacturer. We've done that before when we had defective product, we used them for testing and demos. Just a suggestion.

Good point! I will see if i can get sent Kevreef's bag when the company gets it from ups!

Now we're talking!
Oh, and I would be willing to do an abuse test.
I'll fill it w/ some discs, give it to my nephews for a few hours, and hope that there would be enough to send back for analysis! (My nephews can tear up a tank w/ a rubber hammer)

Have you tried putting the mids in the middle? I ended up doing that when I was carrying a revo dual pack that had the same issue with the discs on the sides. Putting smaller diameter drivers on both ends made it a little easier.

- Edges of the main pocket not as easy to get discs from as I was hoping. I'd specifically asked that question, too when I saw the curved edges.

thats what i was worried about from looking at the pics. kind of an odd oversight to make. the upper pocket is whatever for me but the ability to easily pull your discs in and out should be issue #1 (arguably #2). that was my original concern with the Grip (after getting to play with one there is no issue) and why I wanted to go with the Challenger (very easy to take in and out) until they discontinued it. (I would own a Challenger today if they still made it, the Contender is a turd compared imo...yes I have seen and fondled both).

I guess I am struggling with the progression of bag design, Challenger was simple, elegant, and exactly what one needed. The Contender added a bunch of crud onto the Challenger bag and removed the simple elegance from the bag design. Which whatever, if thats what your customer base wants. But the Catalyst takes the ugly to a whole new level (imo) and it completely diverged from the design prinicples Kilgus seemed to be focusing on with the other two.

My own secret project is to convince Kilgus to bring back the Challenger under the Salient name. So the Catalyst could be the medium sized all around bag and the challenger, possibly renamed, could be the big tourney bag for the market....I still regret not hearing about physical flight around the challenger release. I would have loved to own that bag

My bag is currently out for delivery via ups. However I wont be home til friday (none of you better steal it off my porch :p) I will most likely do a review, possibly a first impression video and will be comparing it side by side to the other similar bag the ranger.
