Harrassing Texts from Disc Thieves

Status

They don't want the disc back, they just want the 2:00 a.m. harassing texts and calls to stop.

bunch of pansies up in here jeesh. vigilante justice will prevail!

Oh really? I guess I must have read Doofenwhatever's comments wrong then. Oh wait, no I didn't...

However, if the thief (and they are a thief if they take a disc that they know belongs to someone else) were to call me to harass me as described by the OP, I'd go visit my local law enforcement agency of choice and have the dumbass receive a call. In my area, I'd most likely also visit with the park officials and advise them of the situation. I'd bet even money that I could get the thief/dumbass banned from the park if he didn't return the disc along with an apology.

I'd probably also document the whole thing somewhere on the web, names and all.
That's an awful lot of effort and outrage over a $15 dollar piece of plastic that someone clearly needs more than I do. Just sayin...

Try to be the adult here!

#1) I don't answer my phone unless its somebody I know. If they leave a message (even a stupid childish one) I can quickly delete the message, block the caller &/or ignore future calls from that same number!

#2) After 2:00 AM my phone is turned off! No annoying calls in the middle of the night! Problem solved!

#3) **DONT BUY INTO THE GAME & THE GAME ENDS PRETTY QUICKLY FOR LACK OF INTEREST! CRANK CALLERS NEED SOMEONE TO HARRASS. DONT BE THAT PERSON!

#4) Put Domino's pizza's phone number on the back of your disc. People need to eat!

This is what happens when you "grow the game". The more popular, the more dbags show up.

But harassing someone back is just as pathetic. It is part of the sport if you can't handle losing discs on occasion maybe you should play something else. Or just don't ink your discs and then you can just harass yourself for not getting it back.

Not that this was harassing, but this summer I had a guy call me on my favorite Teebird that I just lost at Hoover Dam. He said he would be at the course that Saturday and would call me that morning so we could meet up. I never heard from him again and I should have suspected something since his number came up "restricted" on my phone (suspicious, anyone?). I know I should have asked for his number but I guess I had too much faith in this random disc golfer.

In summation, I know that you know that I know you have my disc. Don't effing tell me you're going to do something and then not do it! I hate liars. I'm sure this dude (name was Aaron, I believe) thinks he pulled a fast one on me and got a free disc with MY NAME AND NUMBER ON IT. If I ever see him on the course I'm going to throw a disc at his head.

I don't put my number on my discs anymore, if I lose it, I lose it. It's not worth the trouble of trying to connect on people's schedules and I don't want my number floating around. Discs get worn out and useless and sometimes you lose one, just part of the game.

hey shide, of the 40 disc you have lost in the water, how many times did you go in looking. just wondering how someone else could find them and you could not. there are many disc retrieving techniques for different types of water hazards, bare feet and a sweeping motion has been the best for me.

Best post I have ever seen on DGCR!

Hypothetical: (maybe)

These "criminals" aren't disc golfers but they troll the Internet and found these forums. They always read how upset people get about lost discs not being returned. Then they find one in a park one day and decide to have fun since they know how upset it will get the disc golfer.

They could be reading this thread right now.

I've never received a call about a lost disc, nor have I ever received a harassing phone call.....WHY?

Because I have never, nor will I ever, put my name and number on my discs.
If I lose it.....finders keepers....and I've left a few $25 discs just laying where they landed (never throw two).
If it is truly a disc I want, I go in after it, or continue looking until I find it (not during a tournament, of course).

The only discs I find that I return, are those of people I know. If your local course is like mine, I know most of the regular players, and run into them frequently on the course.

These people have hip waders & go out way farther into this nasty water than I would ever dare. It's not that someone has my disc, so much as no one as even bothered to contact me. These folks are not what I would consider part of the disc golf community.

Try googling the difference between "posession" and "property".

so youre going to look at it as a legal, technical thing.

OK.

Then i suggest you look into what "abandoned property' is.

Property is generally deemed to have been abandoned if it is found in a place where the true owner likely intended to leave it, but is in such a condition that it is apparent that he or she has no intention of returning to claim it. Abandoned property generally becomes the property of whoever should find it and take possession of it first

(yes i cut and pasted that in there due to laziness)

well you didnt copy paste this part, did you :

A finder of property acquires no rights in mislaid property, is entitled to possession of lost property against everyone except the true owner.

See how they wrote posession, not property or ownership? See how they make an exception for the "true owner"?

But maybe the law is totally different where you live. I am no expert in american law. I know it's like I described in switzerland. IMO it makes sense though that you can't just walk around and claim ownership of anything you find lying around.

Yeah...I dont know anything about the laws in Switzerland.

Here, for example, in ball golf, there are entire companies that make $ by diving into lakes to reclaim golf balls. As a former collegiate golfer, i have lost enough $4-5 golf balls in my life to drive a man insane. But when I abandoned the search for those objects, or intentionally left them somewhere that I didnt want to go, I relinquished my claim to that object. It is a part of a sport that in its nature brings about loss. Im not going to the police to search through all of the golf balls those guys found to see if they have "stolen" any of mine. I dont see why DG is any different. When i chuck a disc in a lake, i intentionally leave it behind because I dont want to get attacked by an alligator (we have those in our lakes here...scary bastards...) But if someone else decides that a $10 disc is worth it, its all his. I wont be charging him with theft for retrieving an object that I abandoned.

We can't just walk around claiming ownership of anything we find...but if it is clearly abandoned by the owner, then it passes on to the next guy.

PS we have hijacked the crap out of this thread.

So you only return disc to people you know?

Stay classy

These threads always have a way of revealing a person's character.

^^QFT^^

These discussions always go this way. It's a lot like politics; people will believe, and even violently defend their own interpretation of reality, what is right, ethical, ...whatever. With that said, I always go by the golden rule. I'd like a polite call on a found disc, so I make my best effort to do so. I detest harassing, teasing, and bullying, whether that be in person, over the phone, or via text message. So I won't engage in it. Simple.
