2017 PDGA AM/JR World Championships

Come on in, have a seat. You're interviewing for the position of PDGA ED. My first question is, would you be willing to make a mid season points adjustment for qualification to world's?

Why no I wouldn't.

Oh, well, thanks for coming, we'll get back to you.

That would be a bad idea.

Seems okay to me.

You're hired!

Why Lyle, my friend, you know the correct answer is, "Well, I would be here for the purpose of doing what's best for the membership of the PDGA. I think it would be extremely presumptuous of me to know what the members want at any point in time. In fact, what teh members want today may be different next year and the year after that. So I'd be sure to receive a lot of input from all sources before I make any decision. But to answer the question after giving you that background, I have to say that I wouldn't take any decision off the table before I get the job and hear from members. It would be awfully cocky of me to say that I am all-knowing of what's best before having a chance to know the organization well."

How's that :):)??

Hmmm....would you look at that: 2018 Worlds Invitation criteria.

Posted one week into the qualifying season instead of 7-8 months in. No apparent changes, but still nice to know these things in advance enough to plan accordingly rather than assume there will be no changes and be blindsided by them halfway through. Perhaps a roadblock was removed from the process? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Very nice!

And with the plethora of quality courses we have in Charlotte, I think we can have 4 pools for every division and have them all do a Big Shuffle 1/2 way through. I'm not saying that's what is going to happen, but it's at least a possibility here. No juniors helps as well.

Invites are out::

Looks like over 6,000 invites across all divisions. Everyone got their computers set up and pre-entered data ready for May 12???

Here is a stupid use for numbers:

Favorable schedule for the Advanced division

I looked back at the course scheduling for the past couple of Am Worlds and every division gets scattered across all the courses. But for 2017 Am Worlds the two top rated courses (West Lake and Campden) are almost exclusive to the Am1 (Advanced) division. Almost none of the other divisions play those sites. In fact Am1 plays round 1, 2, 5, 6 all on the same course and then back for the finals. Where as all the other divisions play a max of two rounds on any single course.

Is this just an early draft of the schedule that is going to change or can we expect this schedule to general stay the same?

Seems really weighted (to the extreme) towards Am1 at the expense of everyone else.

Take a closer look. MA1 plays only one course twice and four others once during the prelims and plays one course a second time in the semis that they played once in the prelims. Same routine as the other divisions except the oldest and youngest who play fewer rounds overall.

If I am going, I am going for the experience. I will definitely feel cheated if I was excluded from playing a course, especially if it was considered the premiere course of the tournament. And before anyone says that I should just play advanced, I would love too if that was the only way to play that course, but after being horrible screwed over by last year's tournament registration, I have just enough points to qualify for Masters. I know I will be grouped with a great bunch of guys, but I am coming to play. This is likely my last Am Worlds because I do not have the time or the resources to travel. I hope the experience is not cheapened by the exclusively scheduling of courses.

Just based on the scale of the event, not every division is going to play every course being offered. So yes, that means some divisions aren't going to get to play the "premiere" course in the area, at least not competitively. Doesn't mean you can't play it on your own time just to say you did it, but you're not being "cheated" if your division doesn't happen to be scheduled for that course.

No that is incorrect. If you look at Grand Masters preliminaries they play 1 round at Credit Island early and then again late in the week. You don't even get to play 1 day with two rounds in the same park. Advance arrives at a park and doesn't move for the day. No other division is like that.
Advanced (Tuesday-Friday)
day 1 - play 2 rounds in same location/park
day 2 - must drive between to separate locations
day 3 - play 2 rounds in same location/park
day 4 - play 2 rounds in same location/park

Advanced Masters
day 1 - play 2 rounds in same location/park
day 2 - must drive between to separate locations
day 3 - must drive between to separate locations
day 4 - must drive between to separate locations

Advanced Grand Masters
day 1 - must drive between to separate locations
day 2 - must drive between to separate locations
day 3 - must drive between to separate locations
day 4 - must drive between to separate locations

Having played most of the Am Worlds courses, I would say the Masters play the better (personal opinion) of the longest courses twice - Camden 2. West Lake is more open and likely tougher on scores with hazard penalties. Everyone who makes the final 9 gets a taste of West Lake.

Question then. If you had the choice looking at the courses would you play Masters or Grand Masters? Since I can play either it becomes which will be more fun and the courses more interesting?

Those are not considered scheduling flaws and is not related to the original post. A specific Advanced pool only plays at the same park on the one day of the four they play Camden 1 & 2 which happen to be in the same park. All other days a specific pool has to drive to each course when they play. Those divisions you list have different numbers of pools and some are not full. You sometimes can work it so pools stay at the same park on their two round days and sometimes not. But it's not a primary scheduling goal.

However you have to admit the Advance division has a far better schedule than anyone else.

Depends on how you rank fun versus interesting. Camden 2 is going to be more interesting but tougher. Credit and Richmond Hill are likely more fun to score on for your skill level but I haven't played Credit or know how it will be set up.

I don't think you're reading the schedule correctly. Each player only plays six total rounds Tu-Fri: two days with two rounds, and two days with a single round. The exceptions are Legends and the youngest juniors, who only play one round per day. The days listed with tee times at West Lake are only one round per player.

Yes, for some of the pools, one of the days where they play two rounds won't require travel between rounds. Actually, it looks like 75% of the players (based on current pool configs and capacities) will have that situation one day. Plus, for the pools that have two travel days, it looks like they kept the trips short ... I don't see any that are longer than five or six miles. The longest travel pair looks like it is actually for the Advanced pools for the one day they do travel between rounds ... Eastern and Richmond Hill, which are 20 miles apart. Richmond Hill is the one course that is out there, and other than Advanced, the other pools that play that course only have to play that one round on those days.

Overall, this schedule looks nice. I know how much of a pain it can be to try and sort this out, as I was the one who worked with Chuck (Cgkdisc) to set the course schedule for last year's Am Worlds in Madison. We as hosts had a few goals last year. Primarily, we wanted everyone to play all five of our courses (we had two 27s which took the place of three 18s). We also tried to minimize travel on the 36-hole days, and even tried to balance AM & PM rounds and open/wooded courses so some players didn't get stuck playing both 27s and the wide open course with little shade (Cap Springs) in the afternoon heat. Then there were decisions on short vs long tees, as all of our courses had multiple tees. It was a complicated puzzle, and I'm sure it was similar for the Quad Cities team this year. Bravo to whoever is spending the effort to work on it this year.

Believe me, you will be relieved that you don't have to play west lake and so will your discs... especially if it's windy
