[Question] Naming system for discs - your opinions

29 states have legalized weed for either medicinal or recreational use with 10 or so more on the verge this year. The stuff is harmless. And we think that there is this large stigma of disc golf being just a pastime of pot smoking hippies...but that's just a complex only disc golfers have about our tiny little niche. Everyone I've told about disc golf, has had no preconceived notions about it.

Again, the real problem with the Crank and the Roach is the cartoon ape and the disgusting pest. Both are fantastic discs, though.

There is no stigma, it's just public perception, even people who publicly push no smoking are the first to ask "who brought the beer" during a workday. Even when disc golf lives up to it's stereotypes, golfers take much better care of public parks than the majority, they will actually report vandalism, car theft, etc. I'm about as pro 420 as it gets, but I understand not wanting people to partake during a sanctioned event for example.

Just because it's being legalized currently does not mean it is harmless. But, I won't get into that argument. I have been approached by several non disc golfers trying to buy weed off of me because I had a bag of discs with me. And while it's not everyone who has said it, I've been told more than once that I must also smoke since I play. For the less bold, more socially polite people, how many of those do you think are thinking it?

I used to love a lot of Discraft discs, but I have moved away from supporting them due to their naming system which supports illegal drugs. I would really love our sport to get past that stigma and they are not helping, so I won't support them anymore..

No one's ever approached me to buy drugs (and had better not). I can also say I've never smelled marijuana being smoked while I've been playing on the course. Maybe the newer, cleaner looking pros are helping get filthy drugs away from the game.

That's fair. But I think these people had absolutely no clue what I was talking about.
For the record, I don't partake. Sorry for the drift....back to bad disc names!

My circle has already had this discussion, and if any of us win the lottery, we're starting a company just to put out discs with just random people names: The Trevor, Bob, Rupert, etc...

I generally don't care too much. The one thing I dislike is using both names and number designation, like the "P2 - Psycho" that Discmania does. One or the other, but not both. I prefer the numbers (CD, CD3, TD, PD, etc.) to the weird names.

...

Did. They dropped that a while ago. I believe FD Jackal was the last. (also last to have a picture stamp) Originally the cathcname addition was Dave D:s idea to help sales.

the Rick - a dope-ass putter that always wins
The Morty - A flippy putter that sometimes gets used, works when you need it
Jerry - a Super flippy fairway driver that has little uses
Max Power - a super distance driver (homer's alter ego...he got it from a hair-dryer)
the Kenny - a control driver that always ends up in water
Peter - S Shaping Driver
Brian - Buzzz clone, but not quite as good
Meg - a mini marker that everybody hates

I love the name Roach and the stamp on that disc and I dont smoke anything.

Oh I've definitely smelled it, had people offer it, try to light up, or even light up when I told them I minded. Maybe it's just the area I play in. Some courses are worse than others. But it has gotten better in the last few years.

What's wrong with the ape?

It's just not the aesthetic I go for. Bape, Jamie Hewlett's Gorillaz gorilla, a Shepard Fairey'ed Harambe...these look cool to me. Crank's ape looks...clip-arty. Maybe if they took away some detail/definition from the face to match the simplicity of the hand and disc it would be more graphically pleasing.

I am getting a bit annoyed at DD law theme though. Seems rubbed into the ground.

Oh, but there are so many untapped names!

Just off the dome...
Habeas
Certiorari
Nunc Pro Tunc
Acquittal
Advocate
Objection
Perpetuity
Manslaughter ("Slaughter your opposition with the new high-speed Manslaughter")
Plus, a whole laundry list of other crimes/criminals (assault, murder, robber, burglar, etc.)

I don't care at all about names. That said, I have purposely moved to using one manufacturer (Discraft) because I am so sick of trying to keep the names straight of what the discs do and where they are as far as driver, putter, etc....Hmmm the Shryke, that's uhhh...what is it again? Even within a single brand it can be a little confusing to try to remember which does what. There's too many brands coming out with too many molds so sticking with one makes it a tad easier. Plus since I'm not that good it's not like I am missing out by not throwing whatever from whatever manufacturer. I suck equally across all brands.

Now I do like Prodigy's system. That's super duper easy. However, they need to fix their plastic. I just can't stand it because it feels like the same plastic little kids toys are made of. I know, stupid pet-peeve...

Do you even disc golf?
