Wrong strategy

Like others, I would have paid for condensed coverage, but simply won't watch live. Takes too long, is at inopportune times and the next day coverage is great.

I think where these things are really failing is in trying to copy other sports coverage strategies. Disc golf is nothing like any of the top sports, besides ball golf for obvious reasons. But even that has the country club big shooter mentality ingrained into it, guys live to blow money on ball golf (not everyone, calm down ball golfers).

I feel like condensed coverage is the best but can evolve into something people will pay for. Let's say, MPO 1&2 FPO 1&2 masters 1. Then you could have 3 holes with dedicated coverage for the rest of the field and make a highlight vid from that. You can charge less because you don't need the equipment and crew for the live stream, but can justify it not being free because of the sheer amount of coverage.

To me that would be more of a next step from where things are right now, rather then "we know stuff is free right now, but let's jump in at $30 for one event. It has live coverage! Whether people have the time to watch it or not, you have to pay for it"

I'm not cheap, I just won't throw money at something just because it's disc golf.

I wonder how many of the 100 voters would have watched for free vs how many for a nominal fee. I know, I know...entitled and all that. My point is USDGC is now as irrelevant, to me, as is was a handful or so years ago, when I watched none of it.

I voted NO. In my opinion, it is way too expensive for a single tournament.
I probably would have went with the lowest package at $5-7, but not at $20.

I won't be able to view the event because I have to work during the tournament. I think it is very lame that they aren't releasing post-production for 2 weeks. I also wasn't a big fan of the cbs broadcast because it was televised while I was working. I find it very interesting that Jomez is releasing footage of the Dynamic Discs open during the USDGC. I also find it curious that Innova is limiting exposure of the event that brings them the biggest brand recognition. I don't think this is a very good marketing decision for Innova and it will cost them a valuable share of the market.

All 500 of the "Gold" packages are sold out. So it certainly seems Innova wasn't overestimating the demand

20k in revenue is 20k in revenue, and that's just the sold out highest tier.

Pretty conservative guess would be that the combined revenue of the two smaller tiers would equal that of the highest tier, if not quite considerably more.

DGN is $9 monthly, any idea on their subscription numbers? Curious to see what they offer content wise during the off months to justify the cost? Or only focusing on current tournament footage and expecting people to cancel their subscriptions during the off season?

Wow. I'm kinda stunned that it sold out, much less this soon before the event.

I agree that they will make at least that much with the other tiers.

Call it $50,000 in revenue at least.

Takeaways...

#1: There will never be another free live USDGC. Probably never lower than $20.

#2: Expect Disc Golf Network to start creeping up its cost after seeing this. Maybe not next year but within three.

#3: You can't blame them at all. Who would turn down $50,000?

#4: Coverage will be ridiculously good next year, they'll have a budget for a lot more staff and cameras. This really may move us to almost PGA type coverage with cameras all over the course, people in the booth recording and switching and replaying so there is no dead time and nothing awesome missed.

Doesn't surprise me at all that the disc package sold out. I'd bet a third to a half of them just got it to flip the disc thinking it would be worth money. Its gonna be funny when people complain about which one of the 6 discs they get being worthless...

"A Wombat3!!! WTF?!?"

I Need to figure out the lokal time here in Sweden for the live stream. . i´m not going to pay for something that airs in the middle of the night on work days.

They start from free to 5 Dollar, and now 20 Dollar. That show me what theyr Blabla from "growing the sport "is.... Just making money, making profit out of Disc Golf. Nothing else!

I didn't sign up and had no interest in doing so. I don't watch the events to see who won and really don't care who wins. I watch to see the different player's form on their throws/putts and decisions they make (see Simon Lizotte on Hole 11 at the 2017 Jonesboro Open). I really don't care to watch a 'live' broadcast....I want to be able to skip through any parts I don't care about.

Concerning the argument about spectators were paying $20 to be there and this year there aren't any spectators...so Innova needs to make up the money....if they had charged less for the 'pay per view', they would probably get more money as there would be more live viewers. And comparing it to seeing other sports? Yes, you pay more to watch a football/baseball/hockey/whatever game at the stadium....but how much are you paying to watch those games on TV? They are free to watch as the broadcast makes money from the advertisers.

Anyways....Innova can do what they want and each of us can pay to watch or ignore it. My choice is to ignore it and not care about the live coverage.

Oh, and that was a good 'trick' of Innova....making a high price tier that comes with a disc. They got a whole bunch of people (at least 500) to sign up for the highest price tier just to get the disc. They don't care if the people getting the disc resell it...heck, that happens all the time. The disc didn't cost them much to make...but they got 500 viewers and that's good for Innova and their advertisers.

I'm pretty sure these companies don't make much (if any) profit from their premier events. Innova spends money to put on USDGC. DD spends money to put on GBO.
Nobody's getting rich (yet) from hosting big events. Any money they bring in gets put into the event, not their own pockets.

I laugh when people saying watching on Youtube is free.

I currently have to sit thru 2 commercials between every hole. 14 for 9 hole, 28 per round and either 84 or 112 commercials per card per tournament.

And that is only via youtube and not counting the in broadcast commercials. It has gotten out of hand and no longer enjoyable.
