Course Baggers

I mean, how often does one get the chance to play (one of) the best course(s) in the world at Harmony Bends, and then within 30 minutes, play one of the worst courses in the world at Ashland City Park? #perfectday
I may be heading to the area next month myself...this is very intriguing. 😁

I posted this yesterday on Facebook. If things go as planned, I will be on the road in 23 hours from now.

It's a 7 hour drive home from there. If I go solo, I expect to stop for a couple of naps. As long as I get home by 2pm Friday so I can get to work around 2:30, I will be good.

Oh, I do have a backup after Jefferson City if I am running behind. There is an 18 and a 9 hole course in Eldon, If running behind, I may hit one of those instead. Or, if I play quickly, I may skip Dragon Ridge and head on to Lebanon to hit Jared Hilton. ONLY so I get a shorter drive home afterwards.
i didnt play dragon ridge in the middle of summer but i did in early spring and it was fun and rugged and mean

it by no means is perfect and has some glaring flaws but i would recommend that dragon ridge and even prefer that over hannah hills

imo i say go for it

LOL, I did see that when looking up nearby courses (Ashland City Park that is)

I did modify my agenda, the wife did go (which means I got more sleep, but when she walked/plays a course with me, she slows me down)

I played Airport Park instead of Dragon Ridge and finished up before dark.

But then I had a 511 mile, 8 hour drive home.

The wife did do a good portion of the drive home, from Lebanon to US-69 exit in OK (150 miles), then she drove the last 90 miles home. (She did drive an hour on the way up giving me a nap)

I was car-less this past weekend. but luckily, my friend Brandon offered to drive us up to Chattanooga to bag 3 courses.
We ran into Eric_vdberg, 18th on the course bagger list, at C4 Church DGC. He was on course 1630!, if i recall correctly. He also joined us for a second round at Fletcher Park. Good times.

Met up with Aclay in DFW at Trophy club. Course 626 for me and my tenth different state this year.
Dang it, you should have contacted me, I would have met you guys out there. It's been over years since I played a course I have played before

I usually have Thursdays off, that is when I go out of town, but I usually work night shifts on the weekends.

Today was the Cowboy game, so I had to be up at the store at 3pm anyways.

But next time your in the North Texas area, contact me, I am usually free during the day.

Curious: how did you OG baggers navigate a tougher to navigate new course without Udisc? I've played a few this year (Big Shunga, Bonner Springs High, Carrollton, Flower City Orange, Hummel) that would be pretty hard to play correctly without the orange app. Were course maps more readily available back then? Better directions on older sites? Did you always grab a local?

Lots of printed out maps. Lots of intuition. Lots of patience knowing rounds would be slower as we might be walking around for 10 minutes trying to find the next hole. On many a course, I found it easier to find the basket and navigate backwards to where I'd imagine the tee would/should be. And if all else failed, we'd make up our own tees.

^ This for me, especially printed course maps (some of which were more helpful than others), plus asking locals if any happened to be playing at the time.

Carrollton near St. Louis (as mentioned by Surge) is a prime example. Played it in 2014, and even with a printed map, it was a navigational nightmare.

Obviously, even the most basic signage can help. One thing I've always appreciated about concrete tees is that you can see them from a few hundred feet away. On a course with zero signage, being able to see a concrete tee as you're walking away from a hole is a huge help.

Trying to find unmarked natural tees is royal freakin pain, especially if the course is relatively new. I've played several courses where I simply wasn't sure I was teeing from "the right spot."

Carrollton and Hummel were both kind of a pain in the ass WITH Udisc.

It was just a lot of wandering around for me. I got pretty good at navigating courses blind this way though. But Udisc makes heavy bagging days much easier now.

When all else fails, hope for a friendly local. I remember getting totally lost at Anna Page in Rockford. We'd been wandering around for about 15 minutes without locating the next hole and were about to give up when we bumped into a local kid playing solo. He let us tag along with him for the rest of the round.

As others stated, I planned my trip, printed maps that were available. Wrote down the GPS Coordinates for my Garmin and headed out the door.

when you have played a lot of courses, you get a feeling you know where the next hole is. It just comes natural. As someone else just pointed out, I have walked a course baskwards then played it forwards trying to figure it out.

But yea, the app make it possible to almost double my courses played in a day. Well that and I got in better shape.

Even still, I "play them all" so I usually come across a course on every trip that does not have an app map. I then check this web site to see if it has a map. I actually did that twice on my trip this last week. Both times I found DGCR map was better than the crap someone had saved on the other app.

I will admit this, I actually upgraded my phone JUST so I could download the DGCR app and the other app we all use to find our way now.

Back in the day, getting to the course was sometimes as challenging as getting around it. Several times we used Lat/Long coordinates and ended up looking through a fence, at hole one. Back then we printed course sheets off the PDGA website. We had to use some local directions to get to the course.

Exit right of I-64, go down a ways till you see a red barn, go left to a dirt road by a chicken coop. The course is right after a big Sycamore tree.

Maps were pretty few and far between in those days.

I was trying to bag a course in Memphis right before Covid that had spotty directions to the parking lot/first tee. I could see baskets over a fence from the street, but I couldn't figure out where to get in.

I eventually gave up and went to the bar. I had a limited amount of time before I had to get to the airport and it wasn't the sort of neighborhood where I'd feel comfortable parking and wandering around.

Yup, I remember this. I used to print out directions on mapquest too haha. One of my first course bagging trips was to the wilderness area of WA, ended up getting a flat tire. I went to the diner in this small town and had to use their payphone, good times.
