Let's help the noobs and help others streamline their bags. A lot of other discs have specialist functions (aka do something "better", but these 6 should allow any shot or shot selection to be possible.)

my picks... i'm primarily an innova guy, so my selection is limited....
I also shoot a conservative game... (i shoot to keep the disc in a playable position rather than go for something more radical.) I realize that i am missing a turnover shot, but with proper hand placement or a compliment sidearm it can be overcome.

Distance:
Wraith - There may be longer, faster or better. But from experience, and what i've seen most often, this is the #1 disc. It's most consistent, easy to throw and can serve as an all purpose distance driver. Very good sidearm, and decent in headwinds.

Eagle - This is a fairly straight, easily controlled driver. Any distance driver will beat it, but it will be a close second. The most important aspect of this driver is that it is easily controlled and handles most lines. Great wind fighter and a very good sidearm disc. Makes for a great precision driver.

Leopard - The ability to shoot arrow straight and controlled distances would help almost anyone in their fairway driving and approaches. If you can see the pin and have a straight shot from 250 feet (or less) you should be able to park every time. It also makes for a very good short range driver. The absolute precision isnt there, but the placement is....

Roc - It's the #1 frisbee golf disc for a reason. I didnt believe it until i picked on up. It's an EVERYTHING disc. It will hold almost every line, and improve almost anyone's game.

Gator - I was torn between this and a Rhyno as both fly very similar. The extra length and hyzer ability makes it a very usable mid range/approach. It's a great wind fighter, and it stays on the ground when thrown. I've found it to be one of the best short range sidearm discs. When you need something other than a roc, the gator can handle the duties.

Aviar - (Heavy / Max Weight) The extra weight helps control the disc for short putts and helps eliminate any putting abnormalities (slight wind, elevation changes, etc) on longer ranges. If you need to have an extreme range putt, then the Roc would probably help more...

Honorable Mention: Epic - Best Overhand available. It doesnt fit in the "top 6" but i couldnt imagine playing without mine. (Although i very rarely need an overhand disc.)

In before people jump all over you for daring to say frisbee golf.

I usually only carry about six discs:

dx firebird
newish dx gazelle
beat dx gazelle
z buzzz
sometimes an esp meteor
ss wizard
sss wizard

Eh, I guess that's seven.

Valk- cause it flies so damn straight for me...

Eagle- for the reasons you listed

Buzzz- like the roc, but available in better plastic, so it stays true

Drone- Put some sauce on it and watch it go exactly where you threw it.

XD- Best turnover putt and approach I've thrown

Putter- meh, I haven't figured that out yet, I'll get back to you....

I carry 18-20 to play with and 5-6 to experiment with to determine what enters the bag.

Destroyer
Beat Valkyrie/Beast or a new Leopard
Spider
Viper/Gator
Stingray
Rhyno as my putter

this is what my bag would look like if I could only carry 6 discs

Star Max- Mean headwinds and forehand bombers

Star Wraith- Straight up main driver

Champ RoadRunner- Turnover shots/hyzerflips

Champ Banshee-Thumbers, great Fairway driver

Star Ontario Roc- Does exactly what I tell it to

Pro Pig- My favorite putter/approach disc of all time.

I carry a mixed bag of goodies. If I could only carry 6 it would be.
Innova-Star Destroyer Great disc in the wind awesome for hyzer shots.
Innova-11x KC Teebird Goes straight as sh!t!
Millenium-Orion LF Its beat in and is a great understable disc for me.
Discraft-ZFlick Awesome overhand/sidearm/roller disc.
Discraft-Cryztal Buzzzzzzzz Goes where I want it to go.
Discraft-Cryztal FLX Challenger Best putter I have ever owned. Super flexxy and sticky for grbbing the chains and dropping into the basket!

I have tried posting this 3 times but I keep exiting on accident...

I'm changing up my bag right now but I would go with this:

Z stalker
Champion Viking
Star TL

Z buzzz

D buzzz

Soft magnet

Star Sidewinder-Can be manipulated to do many things, good understable driver
Star FL-Stable/Overstable Driver
Star TL-Control Driver
DX Viper-Headwind and utility disc
Star Stingray-Understable Mid
Pro Rhyno- Putter/Overstable 'Mid' (useful for upshots)

Soft Magnet - gotta have a good putter, and this one's my favorite because it flies straight as an arrow and doesn't often bounce out of the chains. Good approach disc while they are new, once they're beaten in they're a bit understable for anything 200'+

Champion Firebird - Great versatile and overstable disc, and it's deadly accurate. I use it for getting out of tight spots in the woods quite a bit.

ESP Surge - Long Range bombs, is good for backhand or sidearm. Can throw hyzer shots with this disc or long turnover shots.

Star Roadrunner - Straight Line Distance Driver

Star Boss - Forehand bombs, backhand spike hyzers/skip shots

Z Buzzz - for all those mid range drives and approaches.

star TL-straight/turnover shots
champ boss-longer drives/hyzer shots
z buzzz-90% of shots 200-250'
kc roc-turnover/downhill straight shots that need a fair amount of glide
challanger-90% shots 50-200'
dx avair-putting and turnover approaches

can i sneak my sidewinder in my back pocket? :D

champ firebird

esp surge
esp buzzz
champ gator
star big bead

I actually laid that out to try out in the next couple of days.

Wow this is easy, I usually only take six discs to the course when I'm out at school.

172g Star Starfire - Overstable driver
175g Star Teebird - Main driver
17?g Champion Viking - Shorter control driver

173g Esp Buzzz - Anything too short for my drivers and too long for my putters

174g Lat64 Sinus SP - Short drives/long approaches that need to finish left
174g FLX Chalenger - Main putter, anything under 200' with a good look at the basket.

The viking is the only thing that I would maybe change. I want a Star TL in my weight, the one I have is too light/flippy to be very useful.

This is great because I've used roughly 6 molds (albeit with many plastic and weight variations) for several years now.

As an advanced players with roughly 350' of distance this is what I, specifically, would throw...

Beat in 170 FLX Surge: Honestly, I can throw this as a straight, turnover or hyzer disc with equal strength. Main driver for most holes.

New 165 FLX Avenger SS, great out of the box turnover driver for long flip shots, or for rollers.

173 newish ZXL: All fairway drives around 300 feet, super straight, also a candidate for turnover shots.

174 ESP Buzz, fairly beat: Great all around approach disc for the 200'- 270' range, again, good for turning both ways or going straight.

172 Z Extreme: This is just such a fun disc for me. Works for all spike hyzers and short tough skip shots, so stable it hurts.

175 D Soft Magnet: All putter related shots.

Any time I use less than my full bag I like using a Teebird and Challenger. The only thing I can't do with these two discs is a turn-over/hyzer-flip, but everything else is covered.

Voodoo SSS 175g
DX Roc Rancho 180g (wearing nicely)
DX Roc Rancho Flat Top 180g
DX Gazelle 174g - wearing nicely...
DX Eagle-X 175g
Star Valkyrie 167g

Hmmm...have to think about this....I carry so many discs, but I do have my "favs"

1st...my blowfly
2nd Orion Sirius LF Backhand driver
3rd Star Destroyer Forehand distance driver
4th Champ Coyote backhand "point & shoot" midrange
5th Star Gator mostly used as my forehand approach disc, but can be used backhand as a hyzer approach
6th Champion Monarch my backhand distance driver

1. Z Flick for flicks, get out of trouble disc, hard fades, etc.
2. SSS or SS Wizard for putt and approach
3. T-Bone for fairway driving duties
4. Roc, my RW Pro, or beat in DX for straight shots, and longish anny lines
5. ESP Surge for max D drives
6. Some kind of super flippy driver. Currently using Defender for this.
