[Help] OS Midrange: help me spend money!

I don't usually do this but hey, why not? There's a bunch of good minds in here...

I don't carry an overstable midrange. The most overstable I carry is a fresh KC Roc or Z Wasp. If I need an overstable midrange shot I have been powering down on a fairway driver. I've been thinking about changing that up by including a true overstable mid.

Things to consider and background info:
- I consider myself more of a finesse thrower and tend to throw more evenly stables or understables (which is why I don't have this slot filled)

- I usually expect more than 300' but not more than 350' from Comets and Rocs which are my main mids.

- I usually prefer to cycle DX or KC Pro type plastics but this mold *might* make more sense in Z/Champ/etc just so it stays overstable. I'm happy with the other midrange slots in the bag.

- I don't mind beads

- I love Rhynos for their overstability, wind resistance, Thumtrac, and lack of glide. I like the idea of a midrange version of a Rhyno.

- Large diameter/small diameter doesn't really matter to me

Things I am interested in for my overstable mid:
- strong fade
- extremely HSS
- wind resistance
- will be used for rollers
- maybe some skip shots?

Thanks and I look forward to hearing any feedback!

Sounds like you're talking about a Zone. Classified as a putter, but shallow and fast, and as beefy as you could probably need.

If you're stuck on a mid, a Drone is beefcake, and pretty easy to throw.

What is the distance potential of a Zone? Is there enough distance difference to carry both molds?
I'm getting 175g DX Rhynos out to 275' or 300' (I think... I've never measured.)

No, the zone glides like a brick. Its really slow as well. You sound like you are looking for a more normal speed midrange.

How much distance are you looking for? If you want 300ft of OS, that's firebird territory.

That's a good question. I really have to rip a Rhyno to get out towards 275'.
I'm thinking something that can cover 275'-300' more easily and top out near 350'. I can get 350' out of my Firebird or Preds consistently.
Sooo for overstable needs I am loking at:
Rhyno -> ? -> Z Pred or Champ FB (this slot is fairly new for me as well)

A Zone is more like a Pig than a Rhyno so I'd imagine you'll get about 250' out of it if you're getting your Rhynos that far. It satisfies every other aspect of your request though. I would consider it to be the Predator of OS discs from Discraft's lineup. Most Preds I've thrown go straight a good ways but still fade strongly.

Knowing you're a 150 thrower, have you tried a 150 Firebird in that role?

If you really want a mid, the Gator would be my suggestion. I found it to be quite similar to the Zone but with more distance potential.

I use a Buzzz OS for an overstable mid. I use it for both forehand and backhand shots.

For reference I also carry a Zone for shorter shots. The Buzzz OS has more range than the Zone for me.

Personally I believe if you want an OS mid, go with the most OS one you can find and that is the Justice. It is fairly fast for a mid, has little to no glide and hooks up more than Paris Hilton.

I can flick them up to 375, but usually use it in the 275-350 range. Basically it goes as far as your arm speed allows it and then has an abrupt dumpy fade.

Good for short range utility shots too.

Now if your thinking that sounds like entirely too much for what you want, try a Bard.

In BIP around 180, it's like a Roc OS. More fade a little less glide, no turn at all. And it feels like a smaller bead Roc with a slightly more flat shoulder.

I use it as my main mid!

Wow, I wish I could pump DX Rhynos out to 275. I get them out to 225/250 tops.

I wouldn't call a Zone slow, just zero glide. Zones range very well for that reason. Zones do vary in beefiness, with puddle top esp being the most OS I've thrown.

Also a valid answer:
"You don't need an OS Mid."
I don't want to exclude that option.

This is the correct option. Get an OS putter and OS fairway and there's just no need. I'm far better at powering down my Respecti than I was with any OS mid I tried, so I gave it up and have no regrets.

I don't carry an OS mid anymore, only stable/straight to moderate fade. I power down a Resistor for things that must go left. I haven't had a shot yet where I want my M1 back with this current setup.

Maybe look at fairway/mid tweeners: MOAB, Viper, Whippet, XXX. I'm sure there are more too.

I know for a fact that I can easily park 250' holes with the heavies.
I CAN get 275-300 but 225-250 is much more common for me to use a Rhyno. It takes a special hole for me to want to try to rip 300' out of a Rhyno instead of discing up to a mid.

That kinda depends on the Zone. I've been throwing a Ti that is fairly overstable but not a meathook. It might work for the OP's indications, especially if the skip is highly desired.

Nevertheless, I'm a Drone fan and think it might fit the bill. It's an oldie but a goody. Z will probably be slightly more overstable with a bit less glide out of the box, but it's also a nice mold in something like FLX, BigZ, or even Ti FLX. I don't really use it for rollers and I haven't noticed a tendency to skip. I've even been using it less for forehands (cuz of the Zone), but I haven't been able to kick it out of the bag since it's so good for its spot. In addition, people don't talk much about Drones for overhands, but I used to be able to get it as far as my Firebird/Flick on tomahawks.

Hope that helps.

To add to my previous post, I used Drones for a couple years and tried a Zone years ago on a whim. I knew right away it was going to make the bag. With a CFR PD it balanced out the distance ranges much better than Drones ever could. It sounds like you're not one to "power down" on a faster mold though.
