2019 European Open

I think the mental challenge on a course like this is that there are a lot of decisions that can be counter to how a golfer wants to play, at least one who wants to contend. It gets frustrating starting a hole knowing that even with perfect play, the best you're going to do is maybe give yourself a putt for par. When those holes outnumber the holes you can potentially birdie, the whole round feels like an uphill battle from the start. I'm not sure it's a flaw or weakness in the mental game to falter in such cases. Because even with clean, smart play, it's probably not enough to contend for the win, especially if you miss a couple make-able birdies early. Eventually, you're going to feel the pressure to gamble just to have a chance to keep up.

But you still have four rounds here. . .i play alot of one round tournaments and if you bogey early the mental game is HARD.

For the BEAST and the FPO field, par is good. . .but for the MPO field they must feel like they almost need to birdy every hole and a bogey is hard to recover from. . .with all that OB thats a real mental challenge.

Feels like Cat have given up already. . Feels like Paige and Henna likes this layout, the other women don´t
Nybo having a good day :)

Anybody else feel like its unacceptable for a major to have turf tees? The womans coverage showed quite a few slips on the tees and watching the mens it looks like they are slipping as well but controlling it a bit more. I'd like to see a tee pad standard for these tournaments.

Can't beat concrete teepads

How many muddy concrete pads have we seen?. . super dangerous . . . .turf tees are better in every way ( except for shoe companies )

. . .but the turf pads at the Beast looked a bit worn ( very ) . . put in new ones for this tournament

Muddy concrete tees? Cant remember any.

How would turf tees be better in every way? There is a higher potential for slips on turf tees when they are wet or dry. The memorial concrete tees are terrible but there arent many other concrete tees that come to mind at big events that are bad.

Maybe a Northen European thing but that post R1 MPO interview was fun, he ONLY asked about the mistakes they made. .LOVE that :) . . why talk about all the good things they made when you can ask about the bad ;)

Every rain round we had on concrete teepads have looked super dangerus. . but those rubber carpets are worse.

But i have nothing against concrete teepads IF they are well made and have a good structure.

i have in the back of my head an interview from a few years back when the pros were asked about there favorite tees and i think most said turf.

Most every teepad here in Sweden and i think Finland are turf. . .to play on Concrete in the winter is SUPER dangerus

So Ive had a thought for a while now that it might be a region specific thing. It seems like a lot of the European courses use turf tees and most US courses use concrete. US players learn how to throw off of concrete while European players learn how to throw off of turf. Throwing style might not differ too much but they might be different enough that it causes issues when throwing off of a surface that isnt what they are used to.

In the winter here, its super dangerous to throw off of anything that isnt concrete. The turf, rubber and carpet tees are pretty much like throwing off of ice. If I have to play on those tees in the winter I wear metal cleats so I dont injury myself. But I dont play a lot in the winter anymore because of this.

And I have never had an time where a concrete tee in the rain was dangerous. The most dangerous surface is usually throwing off of the grass on courses with concrete tees, when it rains.

I think turf is the closest think to grass , and we make most of are throws from grass

in the type of winter we get here the turf pads are totally playable. . .concrete are not

But sure it might be a region thing, all but one of allt the cources i play here have turf. . .and the ones i see on the US tour is mostly concrete.
Kind of strange that the teepads in discgolf do not have a standard ( size, shape and surface )

It was American players Jolt was referencing who said they preferred turf tees, so...

And any course that involves muddy conditions and concrete turns into dangerous tee pads.

I haven't watched any coverage yet, and have no doubt people are slipping, but by and large, maintained turf pads are the superior surface.
Perhaps these are at the end of their life span and need to be replaced, as Jolt suggests.

I just dont see the preference for turf. Ive played on it all, crappy turf and really nice disc golf park turf and it was all less stable then concrete. I think Im just going to live in the minority on this one. And the tees at the EO do look like they are wore down as well.

I played a round at Brewster Ridge last night (2018 worlds venue). I played the blue tees which includes a mix of concrete tee pads and turf tee pads. Halfway through the course the person I was playing with asked me which of the two I prefer. I had to think for a bit, and ended up saying "They're pretty much equal to me except when they're wet. When wet, the concrete seems to be a lot slicker." Sure enough a few holes later on a concrete teepad there was some moisture and it was excessively slippy.

TL;DR: Turf and concrete are mostly equal, but turf is superior in certain ways IMO

Yes, there's four rounds, but if you're having the same uphill battle every round, and one or more of your competitors is playing well, the pressure to be perfect just continues to mount as the tournament goes on.

My point is that on courses like the Beast, designed to challenge 1020+ rated MPO players, 960-970 players (male or female) are going to struggle to make comebacks once they're down...even to other 960-970 rated players. I think they can plug along, play smart and get pars on a lot of holes, but if there aren't many birdie opportunities, they're only treading water.

What I saw watching the first round coverage was a bunch of holes where all of the ladies had to be pretty much perfect to get par and had little to no chance at birdie other than throwing in from circle 2 or beyond. Looking at the second round stats backs that up. There were five different holes in which Paige Pierce was the only woman in the field to birdie. In a couple cases, she's the only one to birdie those holes both rounds. It's holes like that that I'm talking about being not good for the FPO field. Paige has superior distance to everyone. The only player close is probably Henna, who is the only player other than Paige to birdie hole 7...a hole that requires long straight accurate distance through the woods. If you're playing a third of the course for par where your competitor can play that third for birdie, that's a lot of pressure to be better than perfect elsewhere to make up ground.

Cat was 7 back entering the last four holes today despite playing an even par round to that point. Even halfway through the tournament, it's almost do or die time if you want to win. Treading water around par isn't going to get it done. She's probably pretty secure in a top 4 finish even after that disastrous four holes (she's seven clear of 5th place), so I can't really blame her if she tried to get overly aggressive there to try to make up some ground on Paige (who's playing 1000 rated golf so far).

The score separation in FPO after just half the tournament is quite extreme . . and still we have the four best FPO players at the moment in the top.
How hard will Paige push. . the question becomes . . how big can she win? as of now she would be T36 in the BIG MPO field.

But a fun tournament . . EXTREAMLY strong lead cards, I WANT TO SEE THIS LIVE!! Post has great quality and commentators, but ALL sports is meant to be seen live!
