Bad/Homer Course Reviews

When I travel to an area I often thumb reviews that I found most helpful in planning the trip, whether the reviews are new or a few years old.

Same here.
Also, when I read reviews on the front page, I often read a couple of reviews following them and thumb them, too.

But yeah, once reviews drop off the front, thumbs are scarce.

In addition to the reviews posted on the front page, I usually click through the course photo of the day and read reviews for that course, too, and send some thumbs to those reviewers.

I've heard local chatter from people who are in love with this place. Looking forward to our first trip there sometime this year!

Cousin lives an hour or so from Lake Arvista, so I will be interested to hear more opinions on the course.

im doin the lake michigan loop this year too and plan on hitting lake arvista

I would appreciate your perspective on the place.

why so little amount of dgcr has played it

and is it supposed to be really 5/5

I played it once. It is super duper LONG and it wasn't finished last I was there which is why I didn't review it. It'll definitely be the kind of place where if you can throw 400'-500' consistently you'll love it. Kinda sucks for everyone else. Definitely not a 5/5 IMHO.

Yikes:

Lake Arvista Review

Aaaaaaannnnnddd...why?

Was the Udisc app down? :)

From the hole info tab, looks like the longer holes are par 4 or even 5, so that's reasonable. The 3 pictures make it look promising. If no one else has reviewed it by summer, I might try to get by there too. It's kind of on the way between Devils Den and Beast, so worth a detour perhaps.

It's only rated a 4.4 on UDisc. That equates to about 3.0 - 4.0 on here.

So I guess it's a 5/5 because it's expected to be a 5/5 at some point in the future. This is why courses really shouldn't be reviewed if they're still unfinished, IMO. It can work both ways, like this guy's 5 disc time machine review, or another possibly much lower review due to missing or unfinished amenities, which also isn't fair. Props to you for not prematurely reviewing it.

Reviews of courses in progress are tricky, at best. I played one at a church in Canton, Texas, two years ago. No tee signs, no tee pads, a water feature under construction, and dozens of trees marked for removal. It had (and still has) only two reviews, but I didn't feel comfortable writing a review that I was confident would be out of date within a few months. Instead, I wrote a lengthy course update (basically a short review) to provide some information. However, I'm waiting to get back to play the finished course before I review it. It's about 100 miles from my house, so I still haven't made it back, yet.

It's easiest when the only thing missing is signage. You can get a fair idea of how the course will play. In situations like those, I try to remember to mention what's "still under construction" and try to make sure it doesn't affect my overall rating. But it's harder when the course really isn't "finished" (like the example of dozens of trees marked for removal), and I agree that reviewing a course in that condition isn't helpful to anyone.

I did a review late last year of a new course that was "finished", but there were stakes in the ground for alternate baskets and talk about establishing short tees. https://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=12843 I felt fine giving that a full review as-is (because the course is already great), but noted that my rating would probably be even higher if those additions materialize.

I put up a review this morning that was the first for a "new" course. I found the course to be much more finished than the status on DGCR indicated (it said the tees weren't in yet - and they are). So I updated the course description and did a full review. https://www.dgcoursereview.com/reviews.php?id=11603&mode=rev#90153

What does anyone else think? If the course is listed here or on uDisc, and it's fully playable, you can give it a full and fair review...right?

I don't see why not. Courses change over time while they're getting worn in. The hope is that more people will review it and others will update their reviews as time goes on. The course in my head is Maple Ridge in Westfield, ME. I reviewed it a couple years ago and then didn't play it until the next year, and when I finished I gave a pretty extensive update on my review, including deleting out-of-date info.

If I read a review for a course and find it to be inaccurate upon arrival I'll include that in my review. It's rarely something egregious. This is just the nature of the beast.

Is it fair to rate the course? Well, probably not....but, I don't write reviews and don't honestly place much stock in ratings.

Is it fair to review the course? Absolutely. As a traveling player, I love insight into a course. Emphasis, should of course, be placed on the "under construction" aspect, but tell me about it. I want to know what to expect, what to bring and whether it is worth playing, at this time.

what about a course in summer vs winter

much different play

if open to public it should be fair game (well at least until temporary ratings become a thing for developing/new courses)

now what courses are we missing out arguing about on here that started off as a ramshackle affair with low ratings that transformed into a great course that "should" be rated higher

I thumbed down a review for the first time in over 3 years today. Guess I'll have to update my DGCR profile regarding my thumb policy.

Yes, I was tempted to do the same. Decided to thumb up a review that sounded more realistic.
