Paige Pierce #29190

Paige had years with raiting way above the field, now she has +10 players close to her that could win every weekend . . .lets say Paige plays 5 more years. . .i will be very supriced if she wins more than one more worlds. .

But i do think she will get one more. . and then quit soon after

Why?

I think her struggles are mental—all the physical tools are still there.

What she needs to do to fix her mental game is beyond me though.

My thinking is similar - definitely capable physically, but has some apparent mental struggles to work through. I think that combined with the surge in skill around her is going to keep her from getting there again. Hopefully she will rise to the challenge and put all the pieces together.

Complete speculation: her drive for 6x had her wound up too tight, especially after the way last year went down.

If she's not able to channel that drive/self imposed pressure (a la Paul), then she needs to figure out how to let it go, be loose, and enjoy the moment.

She's gotta figure out where her head needs to be, to allow her game to flow. Perhaps harder yet, actually get it there. I'm sure that's much easier said than done.

Given the depth and talent of the field, simply playing above your rating isn't enough to win this event. Everyone's peaking here (or at least trying to).

I really loved Kristin Tattar's interview after her recent win, it was so refreshingly honest. She basically said, It's crazy, I still can't wrap my mind around it. Paige has been there, numerous times, and keeping that focus and determination gets more and more difficult. I really want to see Paige get one more.

Paige is still nearly 100% BH, right? Improving her FH should help shave a stroke or two per round.

Agree with others that mental game is where she has the most room to improve. All those years of having a huge distance advantage on her competition didn't teach her how to win against players of similar skill. She could make plenty of mistakes and still take down the win. Much less margin for error nowadays.

When she occasionally busts out a forehand it is usually pretty decent. She should definitely work on it in the off season until she trusts it.

She's got the distance and putting to compete in the ever improving FPO field. She just needs to dial in her consistency. She's had quite some bit going on outside of disc golf the past couple of years. Maybe once her life outside of disc golf settles down she'll be able to refocus and dial her game back in.

I could be wrong here but...the sense I get from hearing her speak a handful of times on air about things in her life...basically that there is more to life than winning. That she had been driven for most of her life to be the best, to win everything, and when she didn't win, she didn't feel good enough. I get the sense that PP is evolving past that and trying to have some fun doing this thing that she maniacally pursued for a long time. FWIW.

I think Paige will win another worlds. She has had 5 first place finishes this year. Only one finish that was outside the top ten. The fact that she hasn't won worlds the last couple of seasons is more a testament to the competition in FPO than anything else. Obviously she has some mental hurdles to overcome but I don't think they are that huge. It's not like those mental issues have caused her to develop a case of the yips.

On a side note FPO the last few seasons has really grown into a fun watch for tournaments. The field is extremely competitive and the leaderboard changes from week to week. A lot of solid disc golf to watch.

what would save her more strokes is not trying to fit a square peg in a round hole by throwing passions and fierces on way too many shots. If I had a nickel for every time I've seen her reach for one of those, and the shot end up flipped too hard or hyzers out early (because her throw doesn't mesh with these disc designs and she doesn't commit because she can't trust the disc) I'd have a ****load of nickels

like seriously, throw a damn zone on a wide open approach shot, just a couple of times during a tournament.

This, big time. I see her lose strokes on approach shots inside 200 feet a LOT because she tries to finesse that Fierce instead of just powering a stable putter on a hyzer line, like a Zone sidearm or a premium, fresh Luna.

I have no doubt that Fierce is a great throwing disc for a particular shot. And flies far and glides for days.
Great disc for a new player and most amateur players . But to use it for your everyday workhorse approach disc, as a pro with pro level power? No way. Way too finicky and unpredictable.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Paige has been primarily throwing understable putters for a looooong time. PA4 at Prodigy, Deputy at Dynamic Discs, now the Fierce.

Seems to have had a good record, too. From what I can tell.

And she always had (and didn't shy away from) using the PA1/PA2, Suspect, and Zone until fairly recently

I think one of Paige's workhorse discs when she was with Dynamic Disc was the Deputy. I have a couple of Deputy's as well as maybe half dozen Fierce discs, the latter purchased more in support of Paige. If I'm being totally honest, I prefer the Deputy over the Fierce for what I use them for.

because a hyzer is the most consistent, easy to control shot in the game.

if PP threw a hyzer with a zone on hole 18 at 2021 Worlds, I doubt she loses.

That's Kristen's world championship win at Emporia in a nutshell. Stayed away from OB and got up and down inside 300 feet better than everyone else, usually by pitching a forehand stable disc on a hyzer line right into the circle and banging the 20 footer.
