DGPT: 2021 DGPT - Idlewild Open presented Aug 13-15

Putting on big baskets is too easy, that's why they're laying up. But if you make the basket smaller, they will be more inclined to go for it.

Brilliant!

It's the miss that is punishing. Kevin Jones for example is 36% from circle 2. So he would on avg take a 3 36% of the time. Likely going OB and taking 5 or worse most of the other times. Plus wind is a bigger factor with the raised basket, the putter would have to be in the air much longer.

But if the basket were lower then even standard now by 3-4 inches plus smaller then the risk to flying by 30 feet and going OB is significantly dropped. Actual touch, nose angle control and skill would be needed to run a putt and stay in bounds. Ideally the course would also place logs next to the waters edge to help stop roll aways when putts hit metal and roll to the water as well.

If you want boring layup disc golf keep going down the current path. Don't allow players to run putts with giant raised baskets.

Is your definition of "boring" accounting for the entertainment value of taller baskets leading to more roll-aways?

I'm not one of the guys who hates your ideas. But I do think your presentation is abrasive.

MPO lead card looks to be struggling.
Course is sinking it's teeth into a few buttocks.

Maybe it's just me, but I think they really need to keep the gallery a little further back.

Let's be honest:
Tight, wooded courses don't necessarily have the space for lots of fans to get a good look, without actually becoming a possible impediment to the action. It is, what it is.

Crazy tight race with a lot of contenders.
Players are gonna be checking U-Disc around #15 or #16, and that's gonna figure into, "Do I need to go for an Eagle 3 on #16?"

Very well may need extra holes to determine a winner.

McBeth's putt on 12... "I ain't dead yet!"

It's not just you. I've said that at several events. I just don't get why (as we're trying to more "professionalize" the sport) we allow SPECTATORS on the field of play. On hole #8, if a player wanted to throw full flex forehand or flip up turnover backhand, they would have to violate the code b/c spectators were that close. I don't get it.

They could always tell the gallery and volunteers to please clear the area because they plan to throw there... but it's still more distraction than they should have to deal with.

Meanwhile, Cat's trying to make a move in FPO...
but likely Pierce or Gannon's tourney to lose.

What a crazy ending for MPO.

Raised baskets are one of the solutions TD's and course designers have gone to even more so in the last decade to try and make putting harder. But as we see it play out, what we see is guys simply laying up instead, and nobody wants to see McBeth and everyone else layup from 35 feet like he did yesterday on 4.

So instead of going with bigger and bigger baskets and taller and taller I simply say do the opposite of the trend. Lower to the ground. Make the catching area smaller. Give players the option to try and make it.
