Course Baggers

Well it's official. I have now bagged every course and practice area listed on DGCR in Michigan's Upper Peninsula!

AND, I didn't plan this, but the last one I played (this morning) was also my 150th course overall.

If I had planned it, #150 probably wouldn't have been a church 9er...

Just wondering, do you all keep track of your stats on bagging trips?

I'm sure this is tame per some of your standards, but I was just doing some summarizing for myself so I thought I would share lol. Some stats from the trip I'm wrapping up now (have to drive home tomorrow...):
- 19 new courses bagged, and 2 new practice areas bagged
- 26 total rounds played on 24 different courses (not including practice areas)
- 449 total holes played (not including practice areas)

Yes, look up "PizzaGod" on Facebook. I post my stats and a quick review of each course I play including a "Favorite, Best and Worst" of the day.

I don't usually. When I'm on a bagging trip my main focus is just bagging what I have planned. Usually I end up hitting additional courses, mostly 9er's if time allows. But I try to save energy for the following days. After about 3 or 4 days, I'm basically just a robot. Not sore anymore, or more like just used to being sore. Mrs. wolf always loves to hear "Can you handle one more course today? It's just a little 9er." :D

I do so more after the trip is over though. I'm kind of curious to hear what others do too.

i record scores in a small pocket notebook that i keep in my bag. for awhile i added them on the scorebook here but i haven't done for the last few years at least. between those two things, it's easy for me to calculate stats for bagging trips: total courses, total holes, which day had the most courses/holes, total states, new states added, new top 10's added, etc. i don't keep track of those stats anywhere but i usually end up posting the interesting ones in whichever course bagging thread seems appropriate.

like wolfski, i only do that stuff after a trip. i don't use a smartphone so i have to do extensive prep for a bagging trip and i usually over prepare. i'm typically too ambitious for each day so i usually end up skipping a course or two that's on the list for any given day. i usually keep options toward the end of each day for courses that are higher rated and usually longer or shorter courses that i can squeeze in if i'm running low on daylight. also depends on whether i'm returning on the same route or not, but i usually try to change it up.

Haha sorry yes - to clarify, I mean after the trip. Like it never occurred to me before last night to tally up courses/holes/etc. at the end.

I also don't pay much attention during the trip. Hence my failure to notice that I was going to hit 150 courses played. :D

For the couple of bagging trips I have done so far, I prepped extensively beforehand. I had a list of courses to check out along with links to their DGCR and UDisc pages. Similar to dreadlock, I have noticed that I tend to be too ambitious for each day lol. I always end up driving back to my accommodations after sunset. But even with that I still had to skip some I was hoping to play. On this trip I'm just wrapping up, my goal was to bag every course in the UP and also hit some in north Wisconsin that wolfhaley, DeanMoriarty, and others recommended. Mission accomplished on the former, and I was able to get to Highbridge and Sandy Point in WI but ran out of time for the others.

I have an excel spreadsheet noting when i've played each course and how many holes it was, but i do not tally or keep specific trip related stats for any of my trips. pre-trip - will I usually research possible goto courses, but i will usually keep an open mind until the morning of on which course(s) im going to bag. I generally set low goals on numbers and try to overachieve. For example, on my upcoming wisco/michigan trip, the goal is 9 total courses over 9 days.

Same

. . . I generally set low goals on numbers and try to overachieve.

Complete opposite. I plan the most optimistic possible itinerary, and then back off as needed depending on circumstances.

Keeping in mind which courses are priorities, of course. :)

I do have every "Bagging" trip listed on this web site.

I have them organized by putting the year/month/day and then where I went.

You will not that almost every one of them is one date. That is because I only get 1 day off in a week and don't do multi day trips.

I recently went back and added a couple of early trips from when I first started doing all day long day trips. The first one back on July 7th of 2016 where I hit 5 courses with 60 holes. I do know this, I was meeting my mom in Little Rock to pick up my son, I just played a few on the way up there and some on the way back.

On my recent trip to New England, I was able to play the Willow Valley course in Rhode Island. That marked the achievement of a long-time goal: I have now played at least one course in each of the 50 United States.

I thought I should post about that here, since this crowd might include some people who think that's a good thing instead of just calling me crazy. :)

Hey congrats on playing all 50 states! That is my next goal. I'm at 44 states played and had the idea earlier tonight of timing my 50th state played with my 50th birthday (in 2 years).

Lately I've been making a point the highest rated courses in a given state that I'll be in.

I stopped using DGCR's road trip planner a few years ago. I just find it easier to filter the map by ratings, prioritize what I want to hit, and maybe bag a few other courses that happen to be convenient along the way.

The pure 'bagging' expeditions I've done are pretty much day trips based from home or when I'm staying in an area for a few days.

But I've managed to bag quite a few "less than destination worthy" courses as a convenient way to stretch my legs during long drives.

I have a goal of playing 100% of courses in a state and RI is my main target! Pretty sure it can be done in a day b/c last time I checked there are only 4 courses.

This lines up with my thinking and planning almost exactly. On this trip, I only played two new (to me) courses, Willow Valley and 501. I also played Pyramids and Maple Hill, both of which i had played before.

I was up there to work on (volunteer) staff for the MVP Open. I was able to play MH with a friend on the day after the tournament ended.

Rhode Island has six courses on DGCR now, five 18's and a niner. Eight courses on that "other" site.

So the longer you wait . . .

Good luck!

Hachi Machi! I gotta get on it then!

In the last three weeks, I got two new states: Utah and Wyoming :)

Did you find anything in Wyoming enjoyable? I've only played a handful of courses in that state and they didn't impress me enough to go back for more.

Only played one course, the one in Jackson Hole. I enjoy disc golf on mountains but my review kind of tells the tale - fun but not great. Was going to play the course in Targhee but apparently it's too late in the season. It's getting over 4 stars here so I assume it's at least halfway decent? Guess I'll find out next summer. :)

Thanks. I've been limited to playing in Casper, Cheyenne, and Laramie.

There was a course that I stopped to look at in Pine Bluffs near the Nebraska border that looked promising (The Canyon?) but no time to play it.
