let x = y
multiply both sides by x
x^2 = xy
subtract y^2 from both sides
x^2 - y^2 = xy - y^2
factor
(x+y)(x-y) = y(x-y)
cancel the (x-y) terms on both sides
x+y = y
since x=y, substitute y for x
y+y = y
rewrite as
2y = y
divide both sides by y
2 = 1
subtract 1 from both sides
1 = 0
so, 0/0 can be rewritten as 1/1, which equals 1.

Not to go even nerdier, but you can't divide out (x-y). Since x=y, that makes (x-y)=0 and dividing by 0 doesn't fly.
