[Vibram] Vibram Disc Golf Thread (Part II)

I think its like when some guy came up with Pinot Noir.
All the snotty Frenchies said, "No no ! we only like Bordeaux wines, what is this Pinot Noir, is this cat urine ? "
Then they tried it and they liked it.
But some closed minded people only like Chardonnay, so thats why Steve came up with the Sole.

Great Analogy!

Now can I get a Spanish Rioja?

Doing a lot of 3-5 disc rounds right now. I've been using the Sole a lot. Very versatile as a driver and putter. I've been throwing the Obex lately as well on many of my shots just to shape lines and see what it's/my limitations are for that disc. They feel similar to me and are a good mid/put combo. Probably right about the Ridge and the Wizard though.

What does the Sole do that the Ridge does not? I have thrown more slight annys with my Ridges that it is pointless to think that I would need a Sole. And I have throw so many huge annys with my sumits that it is pointless to think I wouldn't want a Summit of a Sole. Sure, you could make the arguement that the Sole does the work of both the Ridge and the Summit with more glide, but it just isn't the same does not throw nearly as well in my opinion. The Sole really is a putters disc for those people that have played too long with other putters that they cann't make the conversion to the far supirior VP, Ridge or Summit because of their non-traditional feel. I agree there is a use for teh Sole, and I am glad Vibram made and continues to make the disc, but it is the one Vibram disc you should not expect to find in my bag any time in the near future.

TT. That's the funny thing. In my big bag I rarely use the sole. Just when I do a small bag round ... It works well in the hand with the Obex which is what I've been using for the majority of my shots lately. Just carrying a Lace, Track, Obex & Sole. When I have my full bag it's my Summit or Ridge. Just like to keep experimenting.

I love the sole...my main putter. I like my VP for approach shots but don't like the feel for putting. The sole feels right in the hand.

Same here. I love my Soles. They feel great in the hand, and I like the glide and good stability that they have. I have made some crazy putts with the Sole. If it is too windy I will use my V.P., but it takes a lot of wind to make me stop using the Sole.

A top local pro won 2 Soles via our FiveFinger CTP Contest the other weekend and hasn't stopped throwing them since. He is absolutely crushing with em.

Birdie Bash!

Had our local Birdie Bash yesterday (City Park New Orleans), and I thought I would write a bit about my experiences.

It was my first tournament; I had assumed that the Birdie Bash would be a good starter tourney, and I was right. The atmosphere was fun and supportive, even when it got competitive. I'm sure who I got paired with helped, and that I was never really in the running for the grand prize, so there was no pressure there. But there was a good level of camaraderie and mutual support going on, which was cool to see. Plus, I don't play with the local club very often (lots of work on nights and weekends), so this was a great opportunity to get to know them better. Definitely going to start going out more club events once summer hits and my work schedule lightens up.

I loved the format. The TD set up a lot of alternative holes/tees, so it was fun to play a mostly-new course (even if it compounded the challenge of playing with new discs). Or to put it a different way: it was fun to see the course from new angles. The often-shortened holes meant that a birdie was viable on pretty much every hole, which is far from a given from a relative newb like myself. Rounds played fast - about an hour and 15 minutes - which was nice. Again, it was a good easing-into the experience of playing two competitive rounds back to back (something I don't do often, if for no other reason than because I often play alone).

It wasn't all wine and roses, however: the discs failed to make it in time (!!!). The TD should be commended for keeping a good face and salvaging things: he's the friendly local disc proprietor, so he just made his Vibram stores available. It wasn't enough to cover everyone, however, so he ended up getting locals who throw Vibram to give out some loaners to cover the difference. I don't want to overstate the negative side of this - the predominant impression I got was that people had fun - but it definitely had an impact on the afternoon. Because we were working with what was available, many didn't get the discs or weights that they had asked for. This led to some comical situations, like a guy in my second round who was throwing a Soft Ridge that had apparently sat in the water for a year. Not sure if the water had had an effect, but that thing was crazy floppy, and was literally unusable for putts outside of ten feet (he did however almost get an ace with it!). I think people were generally bummed to not get to use "their" discs. I also felt like people ended up with more Firms than Mediums, which I thought was a bummer, because I personally think Medium feels was superior. I hope the experience didn't put too bad a taste in people's mouth, but I fear it did with at least a few, even though it's hard to blame Vibram for the late-arriving discs (TD said they were due to arrive Friday via UPS guaranteed, but that UPS delayed their delivery for some reason).

For my part, I got there early enough that I was able to snag the driver I had wanted (Medium Trak). I had to use a loaner (Firm) VP, though (probably could have used my own had I thought about it - they were in my car; then I wouldn't have had to fear losing someone else's disc!). I thought that the Trak ended up being a good choice for the Bash - it's pretty versatile, and I seemed to be able to get surprisingly easy distance from it considering I'm used to glidely Lat/Westside drivers. I definitely plan to spend some more time with it. My familiarity with the VP (started throwing them after buying two off of Brodysseus; love that thing) was definitely an advantage, and as the day went on I found myself throwing it more and more. Not a massive fan of putting with the Firms (I look forward to snagging the Medium I was supposed to get for the tourney when it comes in on Monday), but off the tee and for long upshots, that thing is perfect. Anyway, I finished with a 16 total from the two rounds - nothing for all the 500'-throwing, 1000-rated studs of DCGR to get excited about, but I was fairly happy with how I played, a few tantalizingly close birdie putts and one hair's width away from my first ace aside.

PLUS: the TD had a throw-off (CTP) at the end of the day to win a spare water bottle, and I won! I was tempted to tell my fiance that I had won the whole thing, and that all they had for the champion was a water bottle ("Look how poor the local disc golf club is, honey; I need to buy more discs to help them out!"). Anyway, it was nice to walk away with something that I earned with my playing.

(Way) TL;DR: Fun day, loved the format, great first tourney, good people, discs didn't get there which bummed people out but the TD improvised and saved the day, and I won a water bottle. *score* Will definitely play in this puppy next year.

Soles FTW!

Sole all the way. I have held all their putters but I love the beefier feeling of the sole. I have one firm in my bag for the approaches and drives, and then 2 mediums for the chain rattling duties. Does the job wonderfully. Used to be a magnet/challenger guy but the feeling of the rubber is unmatched in the wet/cold conditions.

I used to throw Challengers also, but I liked the way the Sole flew quite a bit better. I think it is an extremely underrated disc.

Maybe someone can answer this for me? I was looking at the Vibram flight charts and according to that it says the middle top number is the speed in mph and the bottom number is the distance in feet the disc should travel when thrown at that speed.

My question is this according to the flight charts it shows a Summit at speed 40 should travel 270 feet but the numbers on the bottom of my Summit say speed 40 and the distance number is 68? Is mine a misprint? an older version that doesn't fly as far lol? or what?

The distance number on yours is actually 6.8 and was the original system for measuring intended distance. 40 x 6.8 = 272. They just rounded down to 270' when they switched to the new system.

Edit: Yes, it is an earlier run but with no special significance, just a different way of notating the intended flight characteristics of the disc.

Cool, thanks for the reply :)

Two weeks ago I picked up a couple of Traks, a light firm and a heavier Med. Wish I would have done so a long time ago, it is quickly becoming my favorite disc.

My max distance is about 330'. Throwing from a lacrosse field I was getting Mambas and Diamonds all the way across the field ( I throw from center of one side) but they were always to the right and at right sideline. My traks are getting the same distance but pretty much to the center.

I am aware I have some work to do on my form but it is great to find something that goes far and not so understable to be waaaay to far right to help.

Last week in league I took 3rd in intermediate and passed up guys that should be playing advanced based on the scores they usually put up. My Traks were thrown on every hole but one (200ft hole). Topped my best score on that course by 8 strokes.

I'm thinking that more and more my bag will be vibram only.

I bought a light firm lace that I practice with in the field, and can now throw it well like 1/4 of the time. I am getting there. Even on a good throw it goes only 10 feet or so past my Traks.

Someone brought a proto Lace to the birdie bash I went to. It flew well for me, I shoulda offered him some money for it.

So Mr. Dodge, I have a favor to ask of you. Can you please speed up the process of getting your more overstable discs out please? I played GBO this past weekend and ended up throwing more non-Vibram discs because I could not trust them in the kind of wind I was playing in based on the fact that they are primarily straight flying discs. I flipped my Lace in a tailwind and watched it do the craziest thing ever. I can't even begin to describe it. I really love the Lace, but I just could not predict what they were going to do and they got benched about half way through. Please get me some more overstable Vibram discs fast!

The tester team seems pretty tightlipped about the os lace, havent seen a single post over this thread :/.
Havent they gotten the proto discs yet or have they agreed to some NDA?
Snow has almost melted over here and the winds have gone rough, not that i can yet flip that lace (except forehand) but might try the OS version atleast.

I am guessing they haven't gotten it yet. I know Mr. Dodge said end of April or begining of May and more recently it seems like the hope is May and not later. Either way, the more OS Lace will be great to put in my bag as soon as it reaches the market. Then they can begin work on the crazy OS Lace, which will also go in my bag as soon as it reaches the market.
