[Help] OS Midrange: help me spend money!

I use Gators for OS mids and they come in handy for me. They are very easy to range because they really lack glide of any sort and they won't get pushed around by wind. I have a couple Factory Second champ gators sitting in a box somewhere. I would be happy to send you one if you are curious, just shoot me a PM.

A4 is definitely a straighter disc, i would not suggest it as an overstable disc. It's # are 4/4/0/1
though the A1 is like 4/2/+1/4 just hyzer cut machine
But in reality OS mid is a good thing to have its not JUST for hyzer shots. You can do a LOT with an OS mid. I say if you never REALLY used one, just get one of the suggestions and play with it. Youll be surprised what you can do. But i agree in that a OS mid is one of the last discs I decided to invest in. I wont go back now, but for the longest time I never had one.

I love the A3 for an OS driving putter. It's still short so I wouldn't quite call it a mid. Definitely a tweener. However, still plenty OS. Stands up on a hyzer and NEVER looks back. 4/4/0/3. It's a beaut.

I don't carry an OS mid slot anymore, haven't seen much of a need for it between an OS approach (A1) and an OS fairway (Firebird).

If I did, it would be a Verdict based on the flat profile and comfortableness in my hand

I use a Crystal FLX Drone primarily for approaches or second shots. It is really flexible and will almost always stick when it lands to avoid runaways. They are hard to find. The FLX Drone is also good and I use it sometimes for more distance or colder weather but it does not have the flop that the Crystal FLX has. On the other hand, the FLX will skip some. They also both make good shorter overhead rollers and get out of trouble shots (the FLX is better than the Crystal FLX for this).

The other OS I often carry is either a Buzzz OS and/or a Wasp (depending on wind). They are consistent discs and easy to replace.

If you are looking for skips I would suggest something like a Reaper (but it is oop). Although technically a fairway driver it is a real meathook but it is also a great feeling FH disc. I have not thrown a Justice but I plan to check it out next spring. The feel of the rim on the Justice seems like it would make a good skip disc.

There are a lot of good options here, but I prefer the Verdict and/or Gator. I carry both in my bag and I use them for different reasons. For me and my arm speed I get my Verdict to hold straighter longer in windy conditions, but it still has trusty fade for me at the end. I also carry 2 Gators. One is a glow flat top and the other is a color glow with some dome. The flat top will come out for spike hyzers, low skip shots or windy putting (others have said it, but it makes a great windy putter). The domey one fills my overstable mid range slot and is also used for control flicks as it isn't too stable and gives me some nice distance without hyzering out too quickly.

Everyone prefers certain molds, but try some of the suggestions out and hopefully you find a mold that fits your arm/game.

Sounds like you want a mvp resistor. Plastic type is different than you normally toss, but fits the rest of your chrateria. It has a fairway rim, but is on the slow end. It replaced the gator in my bag.

I was in the exact same spot you were prob 6 months ago. I needed an OS mid/tweener between my rhyno and firebird. I got a Gator but rarely use it. the lack of glide makes it too similar to the rhyno for me so i switched and used my friends BuzzzOS and did amazing with that and i just picked up a Discmania MD3. Similar flight and just enough to cover the gap between the putter and fairway driver. I had a commander in the bag, but its pretty much the same thing and i didn't like the feel of it. Hope this helps

I've never looked at a shot and thought, "Hmm, neither the Zone nor Firebird will work here. I have no options."

:)

Lat64 Trident (5 2 0 5). It is technically a control driver, but is very OS, and works well for midrange too. Also, a Lat64 XXX can work, it's a bit faster at 7 2 0 5

What do you not like about the Hornets?

I throw mids in a similar range to you, and use the Verdict for this slot but I don't think it's what you want (I rely on it for 250-330' BH shots). It isn't super overstable but it will hold a great hyzer line or straight to drifting fade. But, I feel like it's got a bit more glide than a Hornet...I have only thrown a Hornet a couple of times and never for full power in a field so I don't know how its distance lines up with the Verdict. But my experience is it's a bit more stable/less glide than the Verdict.

The problem is that if you want to be pushing this OS mid past 300'...then you likely are looking at a faster mid like Verdict/Hornet, and not insanely beefy. A Gator is definitely a notch up in stability to these and a great step between the Rhyno and Firebird, but don't expect to be pushing them as far as your Rocs at all. I think beadless Gator in star type plastic is where to start looking, whatever the Hyzerbomb version of that is (never thrown it but I think they are easier to find than an actual beadless Gator?). I think you mentioned glow champ Gator...the only one of those I tried was beaded and it was crazy OS like a Justice...I'd be lucky to throw it ~200' on a flat shot. I don't think you're looking for that.

Another thing...I throw my Verdict and Firebird similar distances but the stability and skip is different. If you really want to have a disc that sits below Firebird distance (~350' you said) then probably lean towards a Gator.

I've been using a Dx Whippet for this role. I found it and it was already thrashed and I've beat the living hell out of this disc and it's still an overstable mid for me even tho it's supposed to be a speed 6. I wanna get a real over stable mid but this thing is just money for me where I'm just not that motivated to replace it's ugly ass. Just a thought cuz it's a beast!

I'm thinking Whippet X
Things I am interested in for my overstable mid:
- strong fade Check
- extremely HSS Check
- wind resistance Check
- will be used for rollers Check
- maybe some skip shots? Check

Yep, Whippet X.

I prefer the Drone over the Gator. It flies further and I can forehand it better. The Verdict is nice, but nearly as overstable.

A powered down Banshee works well for me too.

That's a good question. I really have to rip a Rhyno to get out towards 275'.
I'm thinking something that can cover 275'-300' more easily and top out near 350'. I can get 350' out of my Firebird or Preds consistently.
Sooo for overstable needs I am loking at:
Rhyno -> ? -> Z Pred or Champ FB (this slot is fairly new for me as well)

I love my Z pred and it's like a long Whippet, just sick over stable. I don't even know if they make Whippet's anymore. If there is a disc like it in the 4-6 speed category I wanna try it for when my whippet is beat up. I'm guessing a gator or a wasp is it? (asking anyone really as I love the overstable discs)

The first thing that comes to my mind for the "midrange version of a Rhyno" is a Gator. It's beaded & many people who cycle Rocs throw them (especially Champion Gators). It's great in Champion plastic so it stays beefy for a long time. I threw Gators for years. I recently switched to the Mortar. It's based on (is?) a beadless Gator. Unlike the beadless Gator, it's in regular production. Its beadless so it's easier for me to consistently throw it forehand. It recommend both molds, they're great.

I like the Buzzz OS for that Buzzzy feel, great for shorter FH shots as well, fills the gap between my Pig/Harp and Firebird/Craze

Z Hornet is for sure my go to OS mid. The thing i love about the hornet is that its a perfectly straight line that fades according to how hard you throw it. I can crank it out to 275 or so, or power down to 100 ft, either way its the same line and same dump. You can put it straight out on a hyzer and curve corners fast, increase the aoa for a long hyzer, put it out on an anny for a flex... dependable and accurate, this thing is a super functional OS Mid. Between the Z Hornet and an Zone or Pig, im really not missing any shots in the OS Mids game. Hope that helps some.

Well, I'll add that the rim on a hornet isnt at all beefy. And, i cant say it skips really well. Also, i have no idea if a hornet would make a good roller. I guess some of those points arent what ive ever looked for in an OS Mid. Hmm.
