In MO (not too far North) and according to my own vernacular, BBQing is for burgers, brats, dogs, chicken, etc. - anything I can throw on the gas grill on a weeknight/after work.

I reserve the term grilling for slow cooking. This could include, but is not limited to ribs, pulled pork, beer can chicken, pork chops, etc. Generally (at my house) 'grilling' is reserved for the weekends (because it takes longer) and I want to enjoy the experience more than prepare food.

You appear to have this completely backwards, at least as far as I know the terms. BBQ is generally low & slow heat (i.e. ribs & brisket), whereas grilling is something you throw on the grill with high heat (like burgers & brats). Funny how words mean different things to different folks.

I grew up(East Tennesse) with BBQ meaning slow cooked meat basted in a sauce, usually over charcoal or an open flame. The first time I ordered BBQ in Texas and the meat came out dry, I was confused.
I am still not for sure what real BBQ is, but I know what I like.

Veggies are veggies and meat is meat. They are different for numerous reasons. Just because veggies are heated on a grill doesn't give them the right to masquerade as BBQ...

I am not referring to veggies... i am referring to succulent pulled pork or brisket smoked for hours by a vegan who other than his screen name is not pedantic about veganism in any way.

Top notch BBQ. The only veggies is the coleslaw on top of the meat. Hell I don't even like coleslaw but Vegan Ray's is the bomb.

Quirky (kinda like the man himself ;) ) but true.

I think you mean, "our vernaculars are different"... This is, of course, based on geography and understanding of heated meats..

This is likely why StL is not a BBQ center and KC is. KC knows how to BBQ right--BBQ is slow-cooked. ;)

I'm not going to mention Veganism after these replies simply because I don't get enjoyment about sharing it with non-vegans. However since it's become a topic that is being attributed to a boring and innocuous comment of mine I felt it necessary.

Sorry, boomerang. But a vegan who says he likes barbeque is like someone who says they like Mexican food, if all they've eaten is Taco Bell.

I haven't always been a vegan. In fact I used to be a professional chef and grew up on a farm slaughtering my own livestock. Like most people the journey of my life is deeply personal and hard to imagine through the limited window of my DGCR interactions. I wouldn't be caught dead in a taco hell either.

In other words, it's just not the same, my friend. (Not making light of veganism. We could all learn a thing or two from you and Eagle)

I understand your viewpoint but I also disagree. Cooking method/style and product choice are separate.

Furthermore, no carnivore ever goes around proclaiming, "I eat meat, hear me roar!" Not sure why vegans find it so necessary to proclaim their veganism in public spaces. My choice is mine and vegans' choice is theirs. I just don't understand why they (generally) need to talk about it so much... The best example is Eagle, but I've encountered others as well. No offense to any veggie heads, just stating my (unimportant) opinion.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Plenty of meat eaters take to social media to proclaim their superiority over vegan/vegetarians. I have seen lots of stupid vegans and lots of stupid meat eaters.

1. Vegans eat more than just "veggies". 2. Cooking method/style and product choice are separate. Open your mind to trying new combinations or miss out on Mexican Pizza, Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza, etc. In fact the majority of the food you probably eat now is already a mashup of cooking methods and ethnic cuisines.

I was joking, take it easy.

Good advice!

I'm not American so I don't really get this BBQ discussion...internal joke or just a way to destroy treads?

The thread was already destroyed by the time we came around to BBQ and people kept trying to bring up how such and such pro was/wasn't going to this or that company. BBQ was a good distraction.

Plus BBQ is interesting and I've never met someone that didn't like eating it.

And Pros travel a lot and have the chance to eat at different famous restaurants. I thought it would be funny to see them stoke some drama about which BBQ place or style, sauce, etc is the best.

A lot of BBQ enthusiasts are, well, let's just say intensely proud of their favorites.

I do a ton of grilling low and slow, in fact most meats. I do very little to no BBQ.

To me, there are 2 kinds of BBQ.
1. BBQ I like.
2. BBQ I don't like, undercooked/overcooked/old/tough, etc.
I am partial to Eastern NC slow-cooked pulled pork and a vinegar-based sauce.
However, I've had Texas, Memphis, Western NC, and all over. As long as it's cooked well and served fresh, it's all good to me.

On another note, can't wait for the Wintertime Open.
It's like the beginning of the touring and filming season.
Ian and CCDG for the win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This reminds me of the "is a hot dog a sandwich" thread.

Boomerang, I'm sure you make some mean veggies, man. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. Besides, it's all semantics anyway. What's important is filling our bellies with tasty food.
