The folks at Best Disc Gold Discs have published a video with a fine description of glide and when to use it.

 
Excellent video. I like their entire series and commend the videos to everyone's viewing attention...
 
I believe one thing that's slightly missed is emphasis on the velocity portion of the lift formula since it's the velocity squared. If you go from 50 to 60 mph, it's not just a 20% increase in lift (60/50=1.2) but a 44% increase (3600/2500=1.44). Every 1 mph you can increase your release speed pays off a bit more than 1.
 
After watching this I will stop thinking of it as a glide rating and start thinking of it as its lift.
 
These guys really do a great job. I don't think I've disagreed with anything they've said in any of their videos.
