Great Midwestern Tour – Late Fall Edition

Have fun! But I hope you are not bagging courses just for me. ;)

Looks like we might drive straight from Chippewa Falls to Menomonee Falls. In that case we might swap Rollin Ridge for Justin Trails - Big Brother, maybe adding something short like Stockton Park on the way.

I have a ridiculous amount of courses I still haven't played around Eau Claire actually. I just never make it over that way, so I need to rectify that situation. Plus I haven't wrote a review in over a month so I'm getting antsy :D

Stockton Park is a quick little course. Good mix of different holes but pretty short for the most part. We actually just played it a couple weeks ago after a round at Standing Rocks.

I like your plan for a one night in and out to the Twin Cities. Your wild card will be the Saturday afternoon BRP round. If the weather is nice it could be a slow round, if you have plans to meet family hope they are flexible. I haven't played much there in years since I kinda burned out on it after hanging out there almost every weekend from 2010 - 2013ish. Maybe Broken Shoulder has a better idea of traffic these days...

Sunday morning Bethel round would be great! Might even join you for Kaposia if we get along haha.

Unfortunately, I haven't played much recently, so I haven't been to BRP since before covid.

Mono...I think the 11th and 12th are my obligations, but the 13th could be open for me.

Not what I wanted to hear but good to know, thanks!

Was the 3/5 more from design, maintenance, or limitations of the landscape?

West Lake was my first choice for bagging Iowa, but not sure I can squeeze that in and finish Veteran Hills in Viroqua before sunset. Maybe play West Lake and Kelly Oaks Park (niner near Dubuque) to bag Iowa, and then skip Veteran Hills?

Driving from Rock Hill, IL so other suggestions welcomed!

Proximity, daylight, and my janky heel's 45-hole daily limit. Is there a more interesting 9-hole (or very short 18-hole) course on the way to BRP from Chippewa Falls?

West Lake is one of my favorite courses but Wildcat Bluff is much more of an experience. Wildcat does close for bow-hunting for a few weeks though, so be sure to check on that. I would skip Kelly Oaks and play Dubuque Veteran's Memorial. I am biased as I have spent the last 2 years renovating the park, but it hasn't been reviewed since the brushhog work, news pins, and teepads were leveled. Hit me up if you need a guide :hfive: We do have a killer private course in Dubuque I could escort you to as well if time permits.

I would also skip Camden I and Devils Glen in lieu of Veteran Hills in Viroqua, which is very close to Justin Trails. One advantage of Camden I though, is you can whip through it relatively quickly, and after battling Camden II you may welcome the birdie looks. Devils Glen is pretty and has some good shots but there is some filler holes in there no doubt.

I hope that works out! Current plan would be Bethel and Kaposia on the 13th, but that may change.

Anyway, I have you marked on the spreadsheet.

Nice.
I have never played Bethel. Back when I was playing more it was private and we never got on.

Firstly, thank you for a very helpful post!

Looks like it will be bow hunting season at Wildcat Bluffs, if I am interpreting the DNR site correctly. Course seems to be open but with a deer-colored dog, I think I will wait for another time to play there. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like leveling the teepads addressed a common complaint. Thanks for your hard work!

Dubuque Veterans saves some driving, looks like a blast, and should be a fine way to bag my first Iowa course. Thanks for the suggestion!

Local guide is always appreciated, if you can sneak away for a weekday mid-morning round.

If you had to pick between the Dubuque private course or Veteran Hills, which would you recommend?

Agreed, thanks! If we get going early I might be able to squeeze in Veteran Hills after Dubuque Veterans. A veteran-themed day of disc golf close to Veterans Day seems fitting. :D

Guessing we will be out your way around Sunday 11/20. I would love to have a course guide - do you know anyone? :p ;) :D

Shoot, don't leave me out of the loop. I will be comfortably sliding into my new retirement. I can pretty much meet up anytime, toting along a fresh," I ain't got nothin' better to do, attitude". :D.

Consider yourself officially in the loop. No shooting required. :D

Congrats, enjoy!

Yeah we're gonna have to figure out the blaze orange thing. I am well aware that hunting season is a big deal in Wisconsin. Kind of a big deal around here, too.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Yeah, the blaze orange was decided after playing a course near Ripon WI and I heard several gun shots coming from nearby, I could see an elevated deer stand over a near-by farmers field, but it was not gun season yet. May have been someone setting their sights.
After that, blaze orange was always worn in late October and all of November.

Always a good call. Even as an avid lifelong hunter in Wisconsin, even I forget some of the seasons we have. Bow season runs from early September to late Dec/Early Jan. Rifle season end of November. Couple youth only hunts, muzzleloader season, and antlerless hunts sprinkled in between. Basically, I wouldn't want to be deer colored anywhere in the woods from September to February just to be safe. I always have made a blaze orange cap part of my fall apparel.

Ps.....idk how it'd be tolerated, but they make orange vests for animals. Local farmer where I grew up hunting always put them on her brown goats....cuz.....wellllll.......some Wisco natives aren't the brightest.

Never hunted, but was pretty good with a rifle...
Shot competivley for a couple years with my Dad, was pretty good if I do say so myself.
Must have been from his genes, he stopped shooting when he didn't get his scope back (scope was getting foggy) in time for start of season. I had started shooting without a scope (iron sights) and was doing well, but when Dad lost interest, so did I.

Sorry for the side track, Friday nite beverages kicked in.

Blaze orange dog vests would be wise...

I won't just blame native Wisconsinites,
FIBs coming up here are as bad if not worse.

To further the derailment...the outta staters are definitely worse. I met a big group from Illinois at the gas station opening morning last year. They were asking for directions to the county forest about a half hour away. They had no clue where they were going. On opening day. That was absolutely frightening to me.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled broadcast.......

Yup, something blaze orange for me.

Unfortunately when we put a vest on Red Dog she usually refuses to move while trying to figure out what she did to deserve such a punishment ... :(

Sounds like we need to work on that. I can at least get a blaze orange collar.

Local farmer where I grew up hunting always put them on her brown goats....cuz.....wellllll.......some Wisco natives aren't the brightest.

Hey, buck fever is not just a Wisconsin thing ...

In Nelson County [VA], a woman whose car had broken down was riding her horse to get help. A nearby hunter with a high-powered rifle thought he saw a deer and fired. The bullet missed the rider by inches. The horse was killed.
Blaze orange dog vests would be wise...

Yes, agreed (but see above).

I would pick Veteran Hills over Wildwood (private course). I can't guarantee I'll be able to join, as I work most weekdays, but keep me in the loop and I will try to make it work.

I now have a blaze orange dri-fit hoodie, and the dog now has a blaze orange leash and a wide blaze orange velcro collar. Hoping that is enough to differentiate us from deer.

Assuming I can drag spousal unit away from the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in time, Rollin Ridge will be open when we are in the area (closes for hunting November 19-27).

Wildcat Bluff will have to wait for another trip - hoping for next summer.

Hunting season was not on my radar, so thanks to those who gave me a heads up! Most local parks control the deer population with controlled culls rather than open hunting, so I usually don't have to think about getting shot while playing disc golf.

Well, except maybe on some urban courses . . . ;)

Absolutely no place on earth like Lambeau field. I might be biased.....but that place is incredible. I've been lucky enough to catch a few games there. Unlike anything else!

With the potential for winter weather we decided to make this a car trip rather than a van trip. Most nights we will be staying with friends/relatives anyway.

Still hoping to bag Iowa and Minnesota, along with a couple of DGCR top 25 courses. But the underlying goal is to bag enough #1 rated state courses to catch up with BogeyNoMore. :p
