I realize statistically this is not the case...but what is the "argument" for why it would be advantageous? Is it just that the players are likely to be socially comfortable/used to playing with each other? It's an individual sport, I don't really get why it would matter.

I believe it's the old "playing to the level of your competition" argument. Usually (but not always) the super groups end up being top players.

I'd watch a non super group card every tournament if Nate Sexton was heckling the 3 rando's on the card while McBeth destroys them by 11+ shots.
