Losing Plastic

I've only been playing seriously for about 6 months and I think I'm down AT LEAST 30 discs. I remember when I started to play and thinking that this was a nice cheap sport. You know, little or no greens fees, no giant $400 driver to buy, no country club friendly lame cloths to purchase. But 30 discs, most of which were premium plastic, is easily over $400. Not to mention the sentimental attachment you bond with your favorite discs.

How much plastic does everyone else lose?

A lot less now. I've lost my fair share of discs and then some. The worst time for losing discs is right after you gain some distance but haven't figured out the consistency part yet. Just be aware of that when you do improve and it gets a bit easier to keep your plastic. Also, learning when to lay up and when to go for it will help, too. They don't all need to be birdies.

I'd recommend cheaper plastic, too. It's easier for beginners (and most intermediates, IMO) to control and it's way cheaper to replace. You're obviously finding out that actually wearing out discs is a lot more of a rarity than people claim and that most discs are either lost or kicked out of the bag for something else.

See above. Truth. learn what you can do and what you can't. Also learn to control your shots. That is more important than distance. I just lost my 2nd disc this year. Made a bad decision off the tee into the wind. Stepped back up to the tee and made it easily on the second shot. Sometimes going for the safe par is a better shot than trying tom do more than you are capable of.

A couple nice DX, old beat or X-out discs make nice water discs. Just make them the same or similar to what you throw at a few different distances. I have been using Rocs. Good all around disc. I also keep a slightly beat Eagle if I need to fight more wind. And then one less stable mid for control and tailwinds.

No telling how many discs I have lost in the last 7 years. I have probably lost 75% of them on the same 6 holes. Whose fault is that? They are difficult holes but they do have other options rather than going for birdie when you have 425 water carry straight on or par with a 300 foot lay up. I have learned to lose less and less but I still regret all the dumb throws that I should have known better and all the plastic I gave to someone else who ended up finding them and not calling me.

I too used to loose a lot of plastic. One thing that took me a while to learn, no matter how bad the shot, watch it to the end. Even at that you'll be surprised at how far off you are when you walk up to the disc.

Monday I was playing and threw a blind shot over some brush. I was sure I cleared the brush by several feet. After spending about fifteen minutes looking in and out of the brush, I found that my disc had indeed cleared the brush by a lot more than I thought. I also found two discs while looking. Discs do weird things when you're not watching them.

I've lost about 12 or so in the last year, 4 of which were returned.

Funny, though, about the cost of premium plastic. While I did loose my share of Star (one of them on the first throw) a KC Pro Whippet, and two Champ Tie dyes, the one that had me the maddest was a DX Roc...an amazing well-seasoned turnover disc. Took 6 months of careful tree hits and rock skips and dirt landings and grassy field polishing to get it that way...

Throw Pink Plastic put a female name on it...maybe with big swirly penmanship! If you can't find it chances are some hard up DGer will give you a call with your disc.

My average is about 1 disc per month.

That speaks more to the difficulty of courses in this region than your ability. I would like to see some of these guys who never lose plastic play what you play on a regular basis.

Its also why I try to buy Pink discs!

Wow, I don't think I've lost 30 discs in my 6 years combined...

Edit: Do you play a lot of blind holes by yourself? I'm usually with a buddy and we often spot for each other.

I know right, that's a lot of butter. I only played one tourney around a lot of water that I lost maybe 5discs in. For the most part though, maybe 15 all together in 1.5 years.

Wait a minute, that IS a lot of discs.

But the last one wasn't my fault, brand new Champ Firebird, the color of leaves and pinestraw. When I said I wanted Orange, I just assumed neon bright orange, not autumn orange! Innova owes me for that one.

I practically lose discs loading them into my bag to get ready to play. Last night I decide to find some "open" space to practice. This particular "open" space is parallel to a large zoo. The only possible way to lose a disc was if I severely turned something over and it flew (300 + feet) over the zoo fence (I believe it's the giraffe exhibit). Anywho... I grab for a brand new Star Teebird and decide I'm going to show my wife my new and improved distance... HA

Actually, it's almost always water. We just opened a new course in New Orleans (City Park) that puts water into play on 6 or more holes. Most of which require that you clear the water and there's one hole that's a peninsula with water on three sides. I should also mention that there's no retrieving discs in this water (think alligators and snakes).

I have lost 1 in almost 2 years. Christy lost 1 too so that is 2 among the boff of us.

Keep in mind that she is absolutely psycho about finding lost discs and will not give up...seriously, I have had to threaten to leave her before.

you should add that course to the site...sounds interesting and Im sure we'd love to see photos and know more about it.....(some might risk retrieving your discs)

i lost two discs this year, both of which were found by the same dude. i told him he could keep them in both instances
