PDGA NT: 2019 Santa Cruz Masters Cup presented by Innova 17-May to 19-May-2019

Why would they change one of the most iconic holes in disc golf.

Why would they change one of the most iconic holes in disc golf.

Safety.

The old pin placement always put the parking lot in the firing line. I'm shocked it lasted as long as it did without the park itself stepping in. I suppose that on normal days, the parking lot isn't as busy as it likely is on a tournament day, but still, it's always been a dangerous situation.

The PDGA has an article up about the changes to Dela and the reasons behind them.

Thanks for the info, JC. It's certainly a bummer, but if it was that dangerous, then it's understable.

Safety as a consideration is a no-brainer. Erosion has closed and forced entire courses to move around here.

I am not a fan of starting the tournament on hole 25 though. Done to make the course an easier physical challenge? Really? We have extensive conversations on this site about how pro play is outpacing the challenge of courses. How -18 is an outrageous number, how courses need to be longer, how golf course play has started to gain traction on tour to increase difficulty, how the use of roped OB is used to increase the challenge.

I find it ironic that many then clamor for better catching baskets and now provide a path to playing tough elevation holes early in a round, to give pros a better chance, when they are fresh.

I honestly found that part of the challenge and reputation of DeLa was the brutal finish. In fact, I might go as far to say it is one of the signature feature of this course.

I can see the safety reason. . but why move it THAT much?!

Because that's how far they needed to move it to solve the safety issue? There are three pin placements on the hole to begin with. I imagine they're simply using the shortest of those which removes the parking lot from danger.

Just look at the description of the hole from the DeLaveaga website and alarm bells should go off: "Errant throws from Top of the World are common, and it is important for safety reasons to call out "fore" and the number of the hole (or parking lot) the errant throw is going toward. When you play 27."

It really is a miracle this hole still exists at all, history or not.

Yeah, I always found this hilarious that you have to call out FORE (ON HOLE X) to specify? Like, if you can hit people on several different holes maybe not so great design?

Yeah I know its a classic and modern disc tech has noobs hitting people with blizz Katanas that were in no danger before, but.... yeah, still. I know a few courses in Finland too that have classic status, but in an alternate reality where someone presented the plan to the city they would think you were crazy and zero chance of installing the course in such a hazardous way.

Correct, with some of the new DGPT equipment there is a possibility of coverage at Masters Cup. But we have been unable to test it there, so we didn't want to attempt something without first testing it. I have hopes that possibly next year we may at least be able to cover the 3rd round, and hopefully more.

Next week while in Portland we are taking the equipment and will be testing Milo (not confident on results) but at least we will have a better idea with the new equipment.

Increasingly, CCDG and Jomez are offering content for their direct financial supporters, Patreon. I've never really cared, I support them simply because I like what they are doing and think it is good value. That said, Jomez covered the skins from DeLa and gave it in advance for their supporters and it proved to me that the early content is a bonus.

1) it got me totally ready for Masters.

2) they have Zoe and Avery on course and their comments and presence were great!

3) commentary by Big Sexy

4) if you hate Ricky, you will see why you shouldn't after only two holes.

Great coverage and lots of fun, thanks Jomez.

I was FINALLY going to make the trip to the Bay area in July to play Dela, something on my list for years. And 2 months before is when they finally decide to change the course :/

But I can see why. Just a bummer I couldn't play it before it got drastically changed.

Looks like Paige P was asleep for the first 16 holes. . she won this tournament by 12 throws in 2018 and 9 throws in 2017. . . so very strange to se her att 16th place at one point this year

It may be too early to tell but boy is there a lot of blue on udisc. See, if you push hard enough even a storied event like The Masters will give you your birdies.

Nothing about the changes that have occurred at DeLa make me more interested in this event. Just more mediocrity to make folks feel good.

No videos out yet so afraid to get people angry if i talk to much about the play
