I've driven from Vancouver BC to Seattle for day discin' trips several times. It takes about 2.5-3.5 hours each way depending on the border wait times. Totally worth it.
I say just go do it. I doubt you'd be thrown in jail or anything. You'd most likely just be asked to to leave if anyone had a problem with it. Sometimes it's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.
